Two-piece fuchi

Hi all,

I am not a fittings man, but on ebay I saw this two-piece fuchi on a sword in older buke-zukuri koshirae (blade looks like showato iaito) and thought it might be of interest?

Can't think what the purpose is?

Used like a spacer to refit a different size tsuka. Looks like someone went to a lot of work to keep this koshirae together, certainly interesting.

At one time I had a wakizashi with a two piece Owari fuchi very similar to this.
