rkg Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Hey guys, When I perused the Hartman collection catalog I just received from Mr. Merral, I found they had included the estimated price list - just out of curiosity, does anybody have the realized prices? I was kind of curious how "out there" they were at the time, and.... Thanks, rkg (Richard George) Quote
Brian Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Would be good if someone does have it, if they could scan and post it, as there are about 80 of us awaiting the catalog Brian Quote
hxv Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Brian, I can scan it and post it, but it would not mean much without the catalog. The price estimates are given in correspondence with respective lot numbers only. If you still would like the price estimates, please let me know. I'll post it right away. Regards, Hoanh Quote
Brian Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Hoanh, As I mentioned, since there are about 80 people who bought the catalog recently here...I am sure it will be of value to all of them. Much appreciated. Brian Quote
Eric H Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 I can scan it and post it, but it would not mean much without the catalog. The estimate price list is included in the catalog. We are interested to know the realized prices, for estimates and auction results can differ extensivly. Eric Quote
hxv Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Brian: Here are the estimated prices. Eric: Understood. I don't have the realized prices, though. Will see what I can do. Regards, Hoanh Quote
hxv Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Hi, I found this website http://www.satcho.com/Tosogu.htm. Here is what is says: THE HARTMAN COLLECTION OF Japanese METALWORK Christies Auction Catalog (30 June, 1 July 1976, London) This auction catalog is unique for two reasons: first, it was derived from many of the great early 20th Century collections such as Hawkshaw, Garbutt, Naunton, and Joly, and secondly, as all of the lots are shown. Includes over 630 lots of fittings, primarily tsuba. In general, soft metal pieces are shown in color, while most iron are shown in b&w. Text is in English, each piece supplement by brief Japanese descriptions; English glossary and index of artists. With realized price list included. 163 pages, 9½ x 12¼" hardcover $235.00 So, the info is available in one place. I'll do a little more digging. Regards, Hoanh Quote
Brian Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 The realized prices list is always published after the auction, and often included with the catalog. Many of our members who own the catalog will have the list. However those of us who bought these new ones won't have it, as the catalogs were never opened or distributed. Shouldn't be too hard to get the realized prices list. Am sure a member will post them in the next day or 2. Brian Quote
rkg Posted June 9, 2012 Author Report Posted June 9, 2012 Brian, Like I said, the catalogs I just received from Mr. Merral (and which I assume are in transit to you) do include the estimated price list that Hoanh was dilligent enough to scan/post. Brian Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Pete, thanks very much for posting those. Everyone who purchased a catalog will do well to print that out for reference. Much appreciated Pete! Brian Quote
rkg Posted June 9, 2012 Author Report Posted June 9, 2012 Yeah, thanks for putting this up Pete!! :-) Best, rkg (Richad George) Quote
Eric H Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Thanks for the lists of the estimates and the results. However the relatively low prices are deceiving, the gross income at that time was much deeper than nowadays. Eric Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 Just consider that these realised prices of 1976 are no guide prices of today. I know I am kicking in an open door here, but there might be some auction novices who now think that these prices are still current. KM Quote
rkg Posted June 9, 2012 Author Report Posted June 9, 2012 FWIW, the pound was worth ~USD1.79 on 7/1/1976... Just sayin'.... Best, rkg (Richard George) Quote
Grey Doffin Posted June 9, 2012 Report Posted June 9, 2012 These prices are huge compared to those realized in the Mosle Collection auction at Parke-Bernet in 1948. I just listed books tied to the collection on my website, including the auction catalogs. One lot of 8 gold & shakudo kotsuka, including a signed Joshin, went for $130. And the rest of the sale was exactly that way, less than a penny on today's dollar. Grey Quote
