Is the oft refererred to Yagu design book available anywhere? Does anyone have a copy? Is there any location one might search for it? It sounds like it would be an invaluable thing to have around. I saw a mention that it was compiled in the early 20th century, so one would think it findable somewhere. Thanks.

Colin,

despite the fact that i do suppose you do mean the Yagyu scetch book here ;) -i just can tell you that you won´t find it outside.

There´s an short compilation of some scetches available in two books i do recomment-first is: Owari To Mikawa No Tanko by Sugawara, the other one is in an German publication: Ausgewählte Japanische Kunstschwerter.

Some more material is in an American publication:Meito, and in some of the earlier issues of NBTHK Token Bijutsu Journals.

Either way-those scetches will not really ben helpful,as those were drawn by Imaizumi Gennai in the lattest Edo period-and such do not represent the Kodai-Line/and if such-just in an rather marginale/speculative way.

Those scetches may be helpful of course if studying the group of Owari Tsuba-will but not represent the essentials to the Yagyu Group of Tsuba due the fact that approx around 100 were added in latter Edo times and such do stand out of context to the original designs.

The "original" both known scetch-books still are in unpublished possession of the family.

Thank you, Christian. This is very good information and has added much to my education in the subject. One more step forward.

This is much appreciated.

Thanks again.

Hi Colin,

I also sometimes come across the same Yagyu design done in openwork (ji-sukashi) and another time in solid form (ita). Also sometime a common design like the shippo-mon is found in the Yagyu design book. I remember reading like in some of the American Branch of NBTHK publication that some early design from the Ono school were added Yagyu design books early in there development as many of the early Yagyu tsuba were made by Tsubako of the Ono school in Owari.

Yes and yes in support of Christian and David's post.

I prefer Owari To Mikawa No Tanko by Sugawara to the German publication "Ausgewählte Japanische Kunstschwerter"

But the book is very hard to find these days. It will be one of the last books I ever sell, and it has an excellent section on Norisuke (personal favorite) that I think is better than the Nagoya NBTHK book specifically on Norisuke.

Hi Curran,

Am I reading your post correct. Are you selling a copy of Owari To Mikawa No Tanko by Sugawara? I am currently looking for a copy of that book to buy. I already have two tsuba made by Norisuke one of which might be a Yagyu, Ko-dai tsuba.

Sorry David.

My copy is an old and abused one, but one you must wait to buy from my heirs when I pass from this mortal coil.

It is possible I give up Nihonto before I die, but I hope that I do not live so long that I lose this interest.

Hi Curran,

Sounds like me talking about some of my Owari tsuba. For me the search continues for the book.
