Brian Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 A few of us have been aware of this for a while now, but wanted to wait until it was official. I think it is now permissible to post the following: Recently, Ford Hallam submitted one of his tsuba to the annual NBSK Shin-saku competition in Japan. This is a very prestigious society (as are all the main Nihonto societies) and one of the premier competitions regarding Japanese metalwork in the world. It was the tsuba recently posted here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=12785 Well, it has now been announced that not only did Ford do very well..but he won the first prize (Gold) !! I don't think we need to emphasize what a huge achievement this is for a Westerner. There is so much more that a non-Japanese has to overcome to gain recognition from the Japanese sword world, and to get first place is really huge. So to those who had planned on purchasing a Hallam work, but had not done it yet....sorry, but you should have jumped when you had a chance (myself included! Damn) And to Ford...a huge congratulations. I hear he will be attending the prize giving in Japan early June. It is great to see someone finally getting the recognition they deserve. (Like maybe me owning a tsuba for having to bear with you here, all those years when you weren't yet famous! ) Seriously though, this is BIG. So well done, and congratulations. We expect a full write up of this year's event. You have every right to be very, very proud. Brian 1 Quote
Jean Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Congratulation Ford, I am very happy/glad for you and hope that it will skyrocket your business , you deserve it. What I would like to know is : How will it be perceived in Kodogu Japanese circles to have a Westerner win this prize? Quote
Jean Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 PS: Ford, I hope NMB members will continue to get preferred prices :D Brian, If it may soothen you, I have two tsuba from Ford - available of course for an outrageous price Quote
tony edmunds Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Congratulations Ford, a truly outstanding achievement . While your success is a just reward for years of dedicated endeavour it's also fantastic encouragement for every gaijin craftsman/woman struggling to master their chosen craft. All the best Tony Quote
ROKUJURO Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 My congratulations and my admiration! You are simply the best! May I ask if the items were masked or did the jury know the respective makers? Many years ago, Gerd Knäpper, a German potter living in Japan, participated in a very famous all-Japan pottery competition. Without knowing the names of the potters, the jury chose his work as the best. This was an uproar in the world of Japanese ceramics - a GAIJIN on first place! I think that you also turned the world of KODOGU upside down! Quote
watsonmil Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 Dear Ford, My heartiest congratulations. After having seen ( but not owned ) any of your work, ... I was very pleased to see your work recognized for what it truly is ... PERFECTION in metalwork. It is my hope that this recognition translates into commissions from collectors worldwide. After all the years of study and persistance it would be a shame to give up on what you truly love creating ! ... Ron Watson Quote

b.hennick Posted May 17, 2012 Report Posted May 17, 2012 I am very happy to read of your success. I love the tsuba, love your work and your posts. I look forward to hearing more great things from you and about you. I feel very happy being an owner of two of your tsuba. Success comes from hard work, talent, sacrifice and training. You earned your success because of all of that plus most importantly, the support of your family. No one can do this sort of thing without support. So kudos to you and your supporters! Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Don't pretend to know what went into that, (probably lots of what Barry says above) but excellent achievement! I hope this gives a challenge to the Japanese shokunin! Quote
george trotter Posted May 18, 2012 Report Posted May 18, 2012 Congratulations indeed! As a famous man once said "now you are the master"...so now you will need to start looking for a little grasshopper to teach! Seriously though, hearty congratulations...the richly deserved reward for talent, patience and perserverance. Regards, Quote
