the iron arond the nakago was added at a later date to preserve it from falling apart. After all those holes were punched through and what with the rust and all there was a risk that the mei would be lost.

The original nakago was larger than the center portion of the current nakago; I think we can all agree on this. The only reason I can think of for why it was reduced would be to fit it to some sort of WWII tanto koshirae. It certainly wouldn't have been reduced to allow for the added metal; that wouldn't make sense. At some later date, perhaps recently, the extra steel was added for strength and appearance. I'm surprised that a neater job wasn't done.

Anyway, that's what makes sense to me.

Is it a common practice? I have not seen such a thing before. From what I understand, someone was worried the nakago would fall off or bits of it anyway and the nakago has been protected by a metal rim. Woud such a rim not reduce the value of the sword as we all know that you do not fiddle with the nakago.

I do not think that the rim would seriously reduce the value of tha tanto. The nakago had been reshaped before the rim was attached. That means the value of the tanto had been already reduced. I suppose that the original shape of the nakago was just the present shape with the rim.
