Yanone polishing

Thanks for the pictures from the gomabashi blog as it is one of the online references I came across in my internet searches. I am very jealous of his collection as I have not come across that many quality yanone in my years collecting

I would love to see the pics of your mounted Yanone as I have not come across gold being used with Yanones and would love to see how they did it.

 

For those interested the only current quality yanone that I have come across for sale are over in Italy and out of my price range.

Here are most of mine, alongside a kisseru for comparison.

 

2 with Mei on the blades were bought at an antiques show in Himeji, and 7 came directly from a Kura of Kameyama Castle in northern Ise, a descendant of the Karo having the keys. The biggest yajiri looks like a small yari no ho.

Discussing this thread a with a metalworker yesterday and he said polishers tend to have their likes and dislikes. Some may not have the experience with arrowheads and will tend to avoid them. Others will have enough confidence to polish them and actually enjoy the challenge. He mentioned the name of a local polisher who is happy to do Yanone/Yajiri.

I have just come from a visit to a collecting friend and had a look through the following publication:

I believe I've seen this a few times. The sets I've seen are bound in red.

They really don't come up that often, and I didn't remember it was a 5 vol set. I thought it was more like 3 vol?

 

A Reverend in the Philadelphia area showed me his copy along with a bunch of arrowheads he had polished by a (semi-) amateur friend.

Here is one that was hiding upstairs. Looks to be in polish. Can I see striations in the metal, indicating yaki?

Diamond shaped cross-section. Overall about the length of a ball-point pen.

Dear Piers,

Appears to be over-all temper to my eyes, ... but the polish is not the best to see minute detail. Still a very nice yanone. How many more treasures do you have upstairs ?
