Great carving..nice display piece.

Here is a tsuba I picked up at a market in Tokyo recently.

It shows a carp climbing a waterfall....a Chinese legend about the carp crossing the rapids of Lung Men (Dragon Gate) and turning into a Dragon. The carp represents valor and perservance.

Nice theme you picked. I saw lots of carp fittings there, so you won't run short of items to buy...just money :D

here's one tsuba I saw at the chicago show. Usually I don't like namban tsuba but this one impress me enough for me to take the pic.

theme is carp jumping over the gate and become a dragon.

At bottom lof nakago ana you can see the temple gate, around that, look closely and you'll find half carp, half dragon as they transform.............

Hi Bungo

The carp was sold together with this box. Now it seems that there is no direct relation to the carp. Could you please translate the makers name ?

Sorry for delayed answer.

While playing with a new camera , I came across this tsuba in my collection - just thought it might be on topic.

I believe it was made as an exhibition piece.

I understand it to be mid 19th cent. , Ichi-ryu school ( Mito ) by Mitsuyoshi. The inscription on the front face says about accepting orders for this tsuba.

Maybe a 'tourist' piece ?

Opinions anyone ?
