Very badly cut, maybe by a Dremel-type device? Likely put there by a soldier to boost his own morale? Or done for him for the same purpose.

Odd all around. Nichiren Shu/Shoshu/etc are pacifists, so this is odd. But agree, it was poorly done. But I guess it could be his way of coming to grips of war, then again I have seen Samurai armor with the chant on it. Maybe I am wrong, was taught wrong... (I am Nichiren Shu :D )

Hi Justin, Most sects had sohei and some of the most important arms centres were temple grounds. The concept is pacifistic but the implementation was bellicose. The temples survived on income derived from ownership and administration of lands and trades. These had to be protected and were. Even some 12 years ago there was a fracas between two Buddhist sects with personal violence and property damage. The mind is strong the flesh weak, but, sometimes both lose to base motives. John
