UniqueJapan Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Hello everyone, I have a very interesting Japanese Parade Sabre that I'd like an expert on if possible. A similar piece is listed in Japanese Military and Civil Swords and Dirks (Fuller/Gregory) in the back of the book in the Unidentified section. It appears to be rare, but I'd like confirmation. I believe it to be Army, from what I understand likely used during WW2. Possibly an adaption of an 19th century Army parade sabre but made during WW2? Does the 1 star represent a 1 star general? It's a beautiful piece, quite elaborate I must say. I'll add as many photos as I can. Feedback may be posted here or sent to me directly at service@uniquejapan.com. As much detail as possible would be most greatly appreciated. Arigato, Pablo Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Hello Pablo, welcome I have looked at your UniqueJapan site, very nice site. So you are a dealer I hope the fellow members can shed some light on your sabre so you can estimate a good selling price for it, if that is your intention. I personally do not know anything about it. Sorry. Best wishes, KM Quote
Brian Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Nice website Pablo, with great photos. I would, however, love it if you would go to the General Discussion section and maybe intro yourself and let us know a bit about your business. Might help with future sales. Will add the site to the links section if we have a bit of a background. Thanks, Brian PS - Unusual sword there. Surely not registered in Japan as Nihonto? Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Hi Type 19 court style army sword ,1 silver star rank Major general. It was authorized on oct. 11, 1880(meiji 13) and was canceled on nov. 14, 1913(taisho 2). Quote
UniqueJapan Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 Thomas, That was fast, thank you so much. Have you seen a few of these before, or is it 'somewhat rare'? Would 4 stars be the highest? Anywhere online or in print that I can discover more about this piece? Thanks again, Pablo Quote
UniqueJapan Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 Brian, I added a little something about me in the General Discussion section. I placed it in two places, feel free to delete the duplicate, wasn't sure where to submit it. Not registered as a nihonto, right. Cheers, Pablo Quote
Geraint Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Hi Pablo and welcome. Thomas beat me to the punch. The sword is exactly described in Fuller and Gregory 1996 in the way that Thomas has told you. The single star and the ends of the sun rays on the emblem on the shell guard are distinguishing features that separate it from the earlier 1875 version. The straight blade marks it as for wear with full dress uniform, a more traditional blade shape was worn for field use. Cheers. Quote
UniqueJapan Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 I am very impressed with the speed and professionalism of the responses, a big thank you to you too Geraint. Warm regards, Pablo Quote
Geraint Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 I should have added that according to Fuller and Gregory any sword of this type "must be classified as rare." Best of luck working out a price. Quote
UniqueJapan Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 Appreciate the additional comment Geraint. I do recall that line. My copy of the book is in Japan at the moment. Pablo Quote
Kai-Gunto Posted March 19, 2012 Report Posted March 19, 2012 Its very rare IMO,never seen one for sale and with the knot its complete.great condition. 2 stars for lieutenant generals ,3 for generals. The emperor had 6 stars. Quote
UniqueJapan Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 Thanks Thomas, 6 stars for Emperor, interesting. Appreciate the comments, it's a beautiful piece and just feels good to hold. Hard to say what year (say within say 5 years) it would have been made, right? Warm regards, Pablo Quote
UniqueJapan Posted March 19, 2012 Author Report Posted March 19, 2012 Great, much appreciated Thomas. Bye for now. Pablo Quote
