Surfson Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 Hi All. Interesting listing on ebay. Have you ever seen a snake skin covered saya? I've seen lots of same, but this is unusual. Do you think that it was done in Japan or by a GI? Cheers, Bob http://www.ebay.com/itm/KATANA-26-ANTIQ ... 562wt_1094 Quote
Brian Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 The sword looks like a fake, and if not..then it is junk anyways. Look at that nakago. Brian Quote
uwe Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 Almost sure it`s a fake Bears Chinese characteristics IMHO. Uwe Quote
Grey Doffin Posted January 31, 2012 Report Posted January 31, 2012 Fake sword and real snake. What a pity, times 2. Grey Quote

Tcat Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Makes me sick to see reptiles skinned just for this... What about the rays? Quote
Thylacine Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 That seller has put up some 'iffy' swords in the past, I have a feeling he is a pawn broker in the USA! Stay away and save your money for something nice. Quote
Brian Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 What about the rays? Alex, How dare you go and introduce logic into the debate! Yeah...good point. But I guess killing snakes to make reproductions is even lower down the ethics list than a 1000 year old tradition...or something like that. Brian Quote
Pete Klein Posted February 5, 2012 Report Posted February 5, 2012 Well then for anyone who is interested in snake skins for your koshirae just come on down to the Florida Everglades and you can have all the python, anaconda and boa skins your little old hearts desire! Quote
Tcat Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Yeah...good point. But I guess killing snakes to make reproductions is even lower down the ethics list than a 1000 year old tradition...or something like that. Brian Haha... Brian, I predicted that logic. Perhaps I am taking this too far, but I thought it worth mentioning that since this "sword" is almost certainly a Chinese repro, I think it highly unlikely that the previous owner of this slinky scaley number was killed purely for her dress... More likely, the scene of this crime was the back of a restaurant somewhere south of the Yangtze. Note that here in China, very little in the way of meat (snake meat is no exception) gets wasted. There are several snake dishes the Chinese are very keen on, especially in the south. The skin looks to be of the type I have seen adorning snake meat on lazy susans in several major Chinese cities. Now - rays on the other hand... Quote
Eric H Posted February 6, 2012 Report Posted February 6, 2012 Saya covered with snake skin is very very rarely seen... Eric Quote

I'm just a big fan of reptiles, no matter what one is. Don't get me wrong, gotta love all critters, but something about killing a reptile for the skin (or any animal) and not for the food as well irks me. Least Rays leave behind an impression on swords!
