kbt Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 I hope I am putting this post in the right part of the forum, if not please move it to the correct spot , thanks. I am working on learning the different parts and their names, trying to learn all I can about my blade, any help would be appreciated. This it what I've come up with so far . kbt Posted January 28, 2012 Author Report Posted January 28, 2012 Thank you guys for all of your help, I dont have the sword in hand so I cant measure the curve . I would really like to know if I'm headed in the right direction. My books are still in the mail lol . Kim Quote
cabowen Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 it does not have an o-gissaki.... I would be surprised if it indeed had masame hada.... As to the genuineness of the cutting test, there is no name associated with it. Anyone can inlay anything...cutting through 5 bodies is highly unlikely. The only thing we can say for certain about the cutting test inlay is that it is a real inlay..... Hope this is of some help. Quote
kbt Posted January 28, 2012 Author Report Posted January 28, 2012 So it would have a chu kissaki ? I measured the kissaki from a picture since I dont have the blade, I thought if the length was longer than the width it would be o kissaki . Thanks Chris for your help. And the grain would be ayasugi then with some itame ? Thanks Kim Quote
kbt Posted January 28, 2012 Author Report Posted January 28, 2012 I am lost on the hamon and activity, there is so many different shapes in it that I cant figure out which one is more prevalent. I am supposed to get an appraisal back with the blade after the tsuka is made but I wanted to try to figure it out for myself if I could . Thanks Kim Quote
nagamaki - Franco Posted January 28, 2012 Report Posted January 28, 2012 Hamon: __Suguha __Gunome __Choji __Notare __Hitatsura _X_Midare Itame would most likely be checked, cannot see ayasugi in the images. Quote
kbt Posted January 28, 2012 Author Report Posted January 28, 2012 Which mekugi-ana would have been the original the one in the mei ? Kim Quote
raaay Posted January 29, 2012 Report Posted January 29, 2012 Kim The original Ana Is next to the Hizen part of the mei, IMHO and if that is correct the machi have been moved to accomidate the second Ana ray Quote
runagmc Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Kim, if you haven't seen these articles, you should read them and they will answer a lot of your questions... http://www.ksky.ne.jp./~sumie99/information.html Quote
kbt Posted January 30, 2012 Author Report Posted January 30, 2012 Thanks Adam, I'll read those, still waiting on some books, I found on here some where the list of downloadable books, and I downloaded about 6, I'm trying to get it. I would love to find a book that has very good pictures with names and descriptions of the blades, like the hamon , nie etc , any help there ? Like real pictures not drawings. Thanks Kim Quote
runagmc Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Go to the link I posted, it has all of that... Quote
Jacques Posted January 30, 2012 Report Posted January 30, 2012 Hi, There is not only the tameshi-mei which is doubtful, the signature too. Quote
kbt Posted February 14, 2012 Author Report Posted February 14, 2012 Well, I got my katana back yesterday after having a tsuka made. The dragon menuki are the same as in one is facing down the blade looking over his shoulder and the other one is facing the kashira looking over his shoulder. In the pic that I chose the menuki from one of them was not facing over his shoulder and had a "ken?" tail and possibly holding a ball. With the sword edge up the dragon are right side up, so is this correct ? I read somewhere that a menuki facing the wrong way was a running away menuki. Thanks Kim Quote
runagmc Posted February 14, 2012 Report Posted February 14, 2012 it sounds like they are mounted correctly Quote
kbt Posted February 14, 2012 Author Report Posted February 14, 2012 Thanks Adam, I got it figured out, no they are both the same dragon, should have the other one on the way. Kim Quote
kbt Posted March 17, 2012 Author Report Posted March 17, 2012 I am still having trouble identifying jigane and jihada and the utsuri and also the shape of the hamon of this blade . I hate to keep bothering you guys but so far this is the only place I have to discuss nihonto . In the first two pictures does this show ayasugi ? Sorry about the file size I'll try to size them to show up as a picture on the next ones. Thanks Kim Toth Quote
kbt Posted March 17, 2012 Author Report Posted March 17, 2012 Now for the hamon, I think this has several different types , so I have no idea what type it is. Thanks for your time. Kim Toth Quote
kbt Posted March 17, 2012 Author Report Posted March 17, 2012 I dont have a very large library yet, but I do own The Connoisseur's Book of Japanese Swords and One Hundred Masterpieces from the Collection of Dr. Walter A. Compton. Any suggestions for more beginner books ? Thanks Kim Toth Quote
cabowen Posted March 17, 2012 Report Posted March 17, 2012 It is a midare with other elements within. You can identify the other elements with the help of your texts. Quote
runagmc Posted March 17, 2012 Report Posted March 17, 2012 With the sword edge up the dragon are right side up, so is this correct ? Kim, Sorry, I wasn't clear... I was talking about this part being correct. I couldn't follow the rest of the question. As far as the hada question, your sword has mostly itame hada. Here is an example of ayasugi hada, Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 17, 2012 Report Posted March 17, 2012 Any suggestions for more beginner books ? Kim, please check my posts at viewtopic.php?f=16&t=12325 for suggestions on an initial book collection. Ken Quote
