kbt Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 Hello all, I am looking for any info on Hizen (no) Kuni Tadahiro , have any of you heard of this smith ? Thanks, Kim Quote
Jean Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 You should buy some books and read Kim, it is as if you were asking,: do you know these painters, Rembrandt/Van Gogh? http://www.hizento.net/index.php Quote
kbt Posted January 13, 2012 Author Report Posted January 13, 2012 Jean, I am very new to this , can you suggest a book ? Like a book with all or most of the smiths ? Thanks, Kim Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 Kim, were you aware that there are over 30,000 smiths? I do happen to have a copy of Hawley's Japanese Swordsmiths for sale which lists all these smiths, along with other useful info about them. PM me if you're interested. Ken Quote
kbt Posted January 13, 2012 Author Report Posted January 13, 2012 Thanks Ken, I ordered One Hunderd Masterpieces from the Collection of Dr. Walter A Compton , just to get started , I may be interested in that one also. Kim Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 PM sent, Kim. It crossed with yours. Ken Quote
Lance Posted January 13, 2012 Report Posted January 13, 2012 If you were looking for a good reference book for Hizen School smiths, there's HIZENTO HANDBOOK, by Eguchi, translation by Robson, was published by the JSS/US (Japanese Sword Society of the United States) Below is a link to the society's books, last one on the bottom of the page, and appears they still have copies available. Regards, Lance http://pages.suddenlink.net/afuresearch/afu/jss.htm Quote
kbt Posted January 13, 2012 Author Report Posted January 13, 2012 Thanks Lance, I'll check it out. Kim Quote
Jean Posted January 14, 2012 Report Posted January 14, 2012 Best is to order the CD from Roger Robertshaw (see my previous post) Quote
kbt Posted January 14, 2012 Author Report Posted January 14, 2012 Thanks Jean, I ordered one. Kim Quote
runagmc Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Why don't you just google the name. You will probably find enough info to keep you busy for a while. Quote
kbt Posted January 15, 2012 Author Report Posted January 15, 2012 runagmc I did that over a month ago, there are 4 smiths or more showing up with the name Hizen Kuni Tadahiro, cant find any with Hizen no Kuni Tadahiro , I think there is a real possibility that I will never find any info and this smith but I'm going to try. I thought this would be a good place to ask having so many people interested in Nihonto, at least I feel like I have been pointed in the right direction. Thanks for the response. Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 You need to give more information. What is the complete mei of the smith you ask about?; does the sword have a kiku mon or some other device? which generation? John Quote
kbt Posted January 15, 2012 Author Report Posted January 15, 2012 Thanks John this is the mei, I have some books coming I hope will help with my search, but any help with the direction to go would be appreciated. I'm hoping the guy I sent it to can tell me around when it was made . Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 This signature looks very much like the 7th gen Tadahiro/Tadayoshi. Dosoku Hashimoto Chuzaemonnojo Tadahiro b. 1771 d. 1816 I think. John Quote
kbt Posted January 15, 2012 Author Report Posted January 15, 2012 Wow John, Thanks, I dont know what to say, can you refer a book maybe also. Thanks again. Kim Quote
Curran Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 John and Jean are already helping, so you are in good hands and I'd be distant third chair on this one. That CD from RogerShaw is also worth its weight in gold. (brilliant rec Jean) I only minimal interest in Hizen swords, but his book is too good. No matter how my library space may shrink, it will snow in the Florida Keys before I sell that one. <> Quote
kbt Posted January 15, 2012 Author Report Posted January 15, 2012 Thanks, I googled no Kuni but cant find a translation, is this a title ? Quote
kbt Posted January 15, 2012 Author Report Posted January 15, 2012 Thank you Jean, I'm trying to keep the stupid questions to a minimum. I thought it was like a first name or special title, now I finally see how difficult its going to be to be. Quote
Jean Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 If you want to learn a lot and quickly, Kim, there is only one link: http://home.earthlink.net/~steinrl/nihonto.htm Later on I will indicate you a few useful links Quote
runagmc Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Thanks, I googled no Kuni but cant find a translation, is this a title ? Google Hizen Tadahiro... Quote
Geraint Posted January 15, 2012 Report Posted January 15, 2012 Hi Kim, Just to clear this bit up;"there are 4 smiths or more showing up with the name Hizen Kuni Tadahiro, cant find any with Hizen no Kuni Tadahiro "The sword in your picture is signed with five characters that say, "Hizen Kuni Tadahiro" but are read "Hizen no Kuni Tadahiro". Search for either and you should find plenty. Quote
kbt Posted January 15, 2012 Author Report Posted January 15, 2012 Thanks Geraint, I guess I will have to find pictures of the work of these smiths and compare the look to the blade I have and see if any are similar ? I'm very new to this and I appreciate everyones help. Kim Quote
