Cello Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 More like ready for the scrap pile! ......I tried to do a good deed and contacted the seller to advise him about the damage and it's fatalness and to list as such, but all was to no avail http://www.ebay.com/itm/SIGNED-ANTIQUE- ... 0828860807 Quote
Brian Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 From the way he lists it, it is obvious the seller is well aware of the fatal modification. However he mentions the damage, has good pics, and doesn't seem to be hiding anything deceptively. I don't see anything wrong with his actions..which would only fool someone who shouldn't be buying on eBay anyways.... Not much to see here... Brian Quote
drbvac Posted December 15, 2011 Report Posted December 15, 2011 It still would be interesting to see what he thinks final finish would do to help this weed-cutter 0 who would think they were doing a good thing by putting this edge on the blade? Quote
Cello Posted December 15, 2011 Author Report Posted December 15, 2011 IDK maybe it's just me but by stating it's in very good condition which it is not is ,is clearly misrepresentation at minium. Also stating it's preped for final finish?? I wouldn't have mentioned this listing but to mislead someone who has little knowledge into thinking there is a final finish that could be done to this sword is just not right. He Also states no returns.. I wonder why that is hmmmm??....anyway I thought it was funny Quote
bmlusk1911 Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 First: Thank you to all the nice NMB members who have taught me enough to realize THIS IS TOO MUCH WORK EVEN IF IT COULD BE SALVAGED! Second: Would it even by hypothetically possible to salvage this? Quote
drjoe Posted December 16, 2011 Report Posted December 16, 2011 First: Thank you to all the nice NMB members who have taught me enough to realize THIS IS TOO MUCH WORK EVEN IF IT COULD BE SALVAGED! Second: Would it even by hypothetically possible to salvage this? assuming you're serious, it depends a bit on what you mean by salvage. if you mean to properly restore it as an antique, then no, it is not possible. as it is now, there is no kissaki (the somewhat re-ground tip is not a kissaki!), and no boshi. converting it back into a functional sword would include properly reforging (a real kissaki is forged into the blade, with the steel grain following its curve) and then regrinding the kissaki, and then reclaying and re-heat treating it, which would at best result in a twice heat treated blade (with a new tell-tale hamon). so, you're almost starting from scratch anyway, and most here would regard it as further destruction to an antique blade rather than something worth trying.
