Hi, Cello,

looking at this image made me slide futher and further back on my chair, hoping it might get sharper :)

By the way,I see no Kuni in the mei. A better photo would make an ID easier.

Sorry for the blurry vasoline on the lens image lol... The pic isn't my handy work . So the first part would read bishu ju osafune??I won't be able to take pics until I get the sword to inspect next week trying to get a jump on translation since I'm pretty bad at it, but I'm trying!

First part says only Bishu Osafune, the rest is difficult to see right now but would be no problem with a better picture.

So going by this blurry pic I guessing it may read Sukesada? Being that's a common mei and by the placement of what strikes I can make out... I've read that the blades which are dated may be of a better quality than non dated? I've seen that there is quite a bit of discussion out there about this so not sure what is true.

Maybe "Sukesada" better pics needed. There is another "rule", blades signet "Bishu Osafune............" are of lower quality or even "kazu-uchi-mono". Simply not true, as far as I know. Same thing with the "nengo rumor".

It`s always difficult with generalizations :?

Here are the new pics of both sides. So is bishu osafune sukesada is correct? As for the date ni ...shi ...??? I'm confused on how to read this any help would be great.I've picked up quite a bit from this site as far as reading kanji but I'm still terrible at it. I wish I had more time to dedicate to studying or to take some classes.

Did someone wire brush this? That only indicates 'a day of the second month'. The other kanji have been obscured. John

Grey answered as I was posting. There seems to be faint remnants above it. J

I don't think It was brushed,so most of that grey shine is a camera effect but it does look as if it's been rubbed with maybe a little oil. I can't see any other characters above it in person though. But given the sukesada and quality I think I have the date range give or take some years and most likely a bundled type sword correct.....

Hello,

I think it could be Bishu Osafune Sukenaga - 祐永. Well, it is an option. The chiselmarks and size reminds me how made his signature. What looks a bit strange/awkward is the distance between the -shu and the Osa-.

Well thanks for all the responses...I can't even see the second to last kanji at all :? I guess the consensus is sukesada after going over the blade I found some other problems with it so it's back in the hands of it's owner but thanks again for all the information.I definitly learned a little..... :)
