Hi Admin,

Just odd that i've never been solicited to buy swords before in my emails, so i was wondering if the forum is scanned regularly for viruses and trojans which could be infecting it??

I'm not accusing anyone here of such behaviour, so please don't give it to the disrespectful "new guy" for even suggesting it!!

I'm new here and this is my 5th post, i have read through heaps here though.

Only 1 week after joining i'm getting mails like this:

Hello:

I am a private collector and I have 2 Japanese swords (katana and tanto) with the blade from XVIII century. I would like to sell them for the reasonable price (700US$ and 450US$). If you could have an interest, please write directly to: Luytjens1939@gmail.com

Pawel

Luytjens1939@gmail.com

I remembered the odd name from one post i was reading a few days back.... done my search here and sure enough, the name popped up with not much gloss attached to it.

I think it's odd and perhaps if he is the scam artist i've read about in this forum, he may be fishing his potential targets from the NMB member database???

regards

Ernst

P.S please be nice.....i got feelings!

Not new and think only maybe NMB related as you do have an email contact on the board , the seller would then of course be a member. A few years ago when I built my web site a chap called Pawel Novak emailed me from Poland with a similar offer, always the cynic I asked him to let me have his address as I had a friend who lived just outside Warsaw who would bring the money, view the swords and if OK pay him in cash.

Emails went too and fro for around a month but finally he no longer replied, later found that he had contacted a number of UK collectors, luckilly as far as I know no one took him up.

Second came via ebay way back, a collector in Spain bought a Tachi from the seller who's address was in the Island of Jersey, money sent via Western Union......no money or sword, asked me to check it out and of course it was a scam.

May be genuine, if you ask for photographs you will no doubt get some, ask to visit and view, see what the reply is.

Roy

After thought, do you sell on ebay?.

I just got this email. I suspect many on the board have. I just thought I'd post it just in case. If your a regular here you probably would avoid it anyway. But you want to advise new students and others who may be tempted;

No seriously, i believe the scammer gets contacts through this forum, as i've never been approached before. Just wanting to confirm with Admin that all is well security wise, thats all.

Fair comment Adam but just took 30 mins out on the web and since 07 this man has stolen $5000, this was from a few men brave enough to admit the loss. The sites I found were all in the US so you can imagine that world wide he is on quite an earner!!.

Surely he can be traced by one of the computer bod's??, via IP address?, have to admit a lifelong hatred of thieves but as theft in the UK is now seen as a non crime I appear to be one of a small and dieing group. :bang:

This is Pawel Nowak, and he is amply covered here (search the name) and on the net. It isn't one guy, it is a sophisticated syndicate that trolls MANY forums selling stuff they don't have. Yes..they are likely members here, and on hundreds of forums, and send emails to thousands of people a day.

No way to stop them. Their ip goes back to Yahoo....and they have fake id's, documents, passports, photos etc. Probably well connected in Poland too, as the police seem uninterested in pursuing them. I believe Interpol and others are after them though..oneday my own contacts in Poland might just trace them, and will probably "make them go away"

Until then , all new members are warned in their sign up email (if they care to read it) and people who fall for this probably should know better.

We have discussed them at length, so let's not have another discussion.
