azizaedelam Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Hi, Im a bit curious about this katana I bought on an auction in Sweden some time ago. It has a signature on the side telling its intended as a katana. The signature says something like "Universe shines in many rice fields" and my investigations have shown me theres a place in Nagano called "The moon shines in many rice fields", soo anyone knowing something about it? Please see the pictures enclosed. Regards /Mikael Quote
mike yeon Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Welcome to the forum mikael. Unfortunately your sword is a chinese reproduction. Not a real nihonto. Although, not a bad looking fake either. mike Quote
Mark Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 I agree it is a Chinese reproduction. So the signature is spurious, but just for education i would read it as Uda Tamitsu (or Damitsu), no maker i know of by that name Mark Jones Quote
azizaedelam Posted March 28, 2007 Author Report Posted March 28, 2007 Hej guys, Thanks for your fast answers. To bad its a chinese copy Well, it was in my mind it could be. I didnt pay that much for it, about 120 pounds, but it would have been nicer if it was real Japanese. Thanks from a beginner. Quote
azizaedelam Posted March 28, 2007 Author Report Posted March 28, 2007 Hi again, One more question, Is it possible to say how old it is? Regards /Mikael Quote
Ken-Hawaii Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Probably about two weeks older than when you bought it, Mikael... Quote
Nobody Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 Hi again, One more question, Is it possible to say how old it is? Regards /Mikael Hi, The inscription reads Utada Hikaru (宇多田光), a name of a female singer. So, the age may not be older than 10 years. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utada_Hikaru Quote
Stephen Posted March 28, 2007 Report Posted March 28, 2007 the blade has a nice sori and much better than chinese copy kissaki, it may have been made in Nippon, at least is better than the really junky Crappers on ebay. Quote

Guest Simon Rowson Posted March 29, 2007 Report Posted March 29, 2007 The Wikipedia biog says she got divorced this month (2 March 2007). Maybe she forged the sword to use on her ex-husband? ("Hell hath no fury...." etc) Quote

Yep I agree Stephen... real definition there as opposed to the crappers... I still do not see a yokote and the mei looks a bit dremel'ly to me..... Sad day when we are grading the quality of a crapper!!! Cheers! Quote

azizaedelam Posted March 29, 2007 Author Report Posted March 29, 2007 That was a lot of info, thanks all you guys, altough it wasnt really the info i wished for , especially that signature being a singer, what a joke... I guess this sword doesnt have the standard for this forum, so excuse me for that, however it has a hardening line (guess its called hamom) that is visible, but hard to catch on picture. Its supposed to be a damascus blade, is that true? Quote

I am sorry for that. It might be only a joke. Or the mei was intended to be "Uta Kunimitsu (宇多國光) and failed to be inscribed correctly. Quote
azizaedelam Posted March 29, 2007 Author Report Posted March 29, 2007 Hi, No, dont be sorry, im grateful for all information i can get. Is there some possibility that its a Nippon blade? And in that case, how to be certain? But if its a fake, then its a fake... Quote
