micsam Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Is there a specific (or general) order to the kanji in a signature? (ie. date, province, smith?) In the attached photo, I believe the 3rd & 4th kanji to be: Nori - Yuki, but I have had trouble with the rest... any help, please? Quote
george trotter Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Not sure if I can help you Mr ? Firstly I don't know much about the mei system on kodzuka, but I have usually noted them as art title then artisan name. I presume the first 3 kanji are the artistic title and the last 2 are the name...if so this can be read Zuikoku, Suikoku, Yukikuni, Yorikuni, Michikuni and Ayakuni...and...? My Wakayama has 8 artists given with names starting with this kanji on page 336 and two more on page 716. None have Kuni as the second kanji, but perhaps one of these is connected? You would have to do some research to find this link. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Regards, Quote
Nobody Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 濱野矩随 (+seal) – Hamano Noriyuki A big name, but the mei in your picture does not look good to me. Quote
george trotter Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 Oh, I see...I would not have recognised Hamano in those first two kanji, and the last one is a seal...duh! I checked Wakayama again and the two Noriyuki generations are given on page 112. Sorry for the mistake. Quote
micsam Posted October 10, 2011 Author Report Posted October 10, 2011 Many thanks to all for your kind attention. My apologies for not properly signing my post. I am Michael. Mr. Moriyama, when you say "the mei does not look good to you", do you mean it may have been engraved later (a forgery)? The kozuka was acquired over 30 years ago. I have attached a photo of the kozuka. Perhaps the style might help in determining authenticity. Thank you. Michael Quote
Jean Posted October 10, 2011 Report Posted October 10, 2011 It means Gimei/false signature/forgery Quote
micsam Posted October 10, 2011 Author Report Posted October 10, 2011 That is disappointing. Many thanks for all the help. Michael Quote
