Petteri Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Hi guys, I'm considering buying a katana, but I was wondering whether the signature "Tatara Nagayuki" is gimei. And here is the blade: Would appreciate your thoughts on this! Quote
Ludolf Richter Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Because Tatara Nagayuki (Hawley NAG 562,Settsu and Kii,Enpo and Tenwa Era,Yasunaga School) is a "big name",one has to reckon with Gimei. Here are some sources to check the authenticy of the Mei: -Tokuno p.467 -Fujishiro/Shinto p.181 -Iida -Yoshu to Zuroku 1 (YTZ 1) -74 -Token to Rekishi (TTR) 612 and 616 -29th Juyo Tokubetsu -Ogasawara,Shinto,Nr.62 -others? Petteri Posted September 24, 2011 Author Report Posted September 24, 2011 Hi Ludolf, Thanks for the info and references! As I understand Tatare Nagayuki was a wazamono, so I could see how gimei signatures would be a concern. I'm a beginner when it comes to studying nihonto, I've bought some books but they have not yet arrived. In another thread here on NMB, I saw a blade with a similar mei: I haven't found an oshigata of a confirmed NAG562 mei though... Quote
Petteri Posted September 24, 2011 Author Report Posted September 24, 2011 Then I found this auction result from the UK: Lot No. 25 A Japanese SWORD (KATANA), 17TH CENTURY 29.06.2011 1.770,11 € Description: A Japanese SWORD (KATANA), 17TH CENTURY with curved single-edged blade with wavy hamon, signed tang pierced with a single mekugi-ana, curved nakago-jiri, with a fabric-bound sharkskin-covered grip, in a regulation saya 71.5cm; 28 1/4in blade The signature reads, `Oite Settsu Tatara Nagayuki zo`. Ludolf Richter Posted September 24, 2011 Report Posted September 24, 2011 Hi Petter,I have now checked the Mei ("Tatara Uji Nagayuki") with the following sources: YTZ 1-74,Shinto Bengi Oshigata,Fujishiro/Shinto-171 (Hawley "181"),Tokuno 467,TTR 612 and TTR 616. There is no doubt about it: GIMEI. Sorry Ludolf PS.I have added your Mei after photoshopping your pic Quote
