george trotter Posted September 18, 2011 Report Posted September 18, 2011 After last weekend in Sydney attending the Shinsa there, I had the pleasure of attending a two day Arms & Militaria Fair this weekend in Perth, my home town. Glad to see more familiar faces and quite a few swords as well. most swords we've had for a long time, largely thanks to John Grasso and his wife Christy who brought a great display of swords and fittings again with some great gendaito and older blades for sale ( he's on nihonto.com.au ).... John of course will be remembered from Sydney last week when he made what must have been some kind of record with two of the three "best in Shinsa" swords being his! There were quite a number of good quality gunto with various dealers and remarkable as most has silver mon, also a nice kyu-gunto with mon. A few local treasures turned up, in particular two tantos appeared, a great little Masayuki, very thick and with kaeri stretching back about half the blade and a small delicate kanmuri otoshi tanto signed Seki Kanekiyo. Both were blades of late shinshinto and gendai periods. Amazing what turns up...why did we never see tantos around in the 70s-80s?. I picked up a few gunto sword parts and a great little sushi knife for my wife (must keep in good), and a great silk sword pillow to replace my ancient ratty one...all in all a great two weekends...yet I am still not sworded out! hybridfiat Posted September 18, 2011 Report Posted September 18, 2011 Bl@@dy hell! Dont they advertise these events? I was home on break that weekend and didnt know it had even happened. It is bad enough not being able to see nihonto because of WAs isolation and the dearth of collectors here, but to miss this event takes the cake. Quote
sanjuro Posted September 18, 2011 Report Posted September 18, 2011 Likewise, Bl@@dy hell! I didnt know about it either and I spoke to two collectors over here during the week. Perhaps its one of those well kept secrets where the organisers complain afterward about the poor turn out. Steve. There are a few collectors around Perth, although I guess in comparison to other cities we are a little thin on the ground. But there are a few of us out there :D Quote
Binnawan Posted September 18, 2011 Report Posted September 18, 2011 Steve, The event has been advertised in newspapers and on radio (Curtin FM) for weeks, and it is on the same weekend every year. Where have you been hiding? Baz Ford Quote
Binnawan Posted September 18, 2011 Report Posted September 18, 2011 Just missed your post Keith, The organisers won't be complaining. Record number of tables and sellers. Visitor numbers up on Saturday, quieter on Sunday due to weather. Baz Ford Quote

Where have you been hiding? Baz Ford Ive been hiding in Perth. What is Curtin FM? Never heard of it. I listen to 93.7, 94.5,720 ABC and JJJ Is there a website with dates and venue that I can bookmark? Id like to get together with collectors and see some quality nihonto in the flesh as it were. Ive only been able to se the good stuff online so far or meager glimses in museums overseas. Ive got a couple or 3 but they arent anything special. Quote
george trotter Posted September 19, 2011 Author Report Posted September 19, 2011 Hi all, especially those who missed the Perth A&M Fair...yes, this event is on every year at the Cannington Dog Track, but this is the best year yet for nihonto, as I said , largely due to John and Christy Grasso. Now that I've sung the praises of the fair it will probably revert to "normal" with relatively few nihonto among the militaria...but, would be good to see more dealers/collectors bring stuff out. The fair is run by the WA Arms & Armour Society... Regards, Quote

The firewall here blocks it, citing as a pathetic excuse, weapons. Quote
Alan Morton Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 Steve and Baz, you should come to Sydney more often, all the other collectors over there do and then you could get-together more often. Alan Quote
sanjuro Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 Curtin FM????? Is that like a retro Triple J? ...... and who the hell has time to read a newspaper any more? Quote
David Flynn Posted September 19, 2011 Report Posted September 19, 2011 Sounds like excuses Keith? Quote

Nihonto Australia Posted October 1, 2012 Report Posted October 1, 2012 Hi All, Finally getting around to posting a few pics of the show, good to catch up with everyone, we had a great time once again. Sorry Saturday was so busy it was hard to talk to everyone! George we will have to catch up next year for a bit more of a yarn. kind regards John http://www.nihonto.com.au info@nihonto.com.au Quote
george trotter Posted October 1, 2012 Author Report Posted October 1, 2012 Hi John and gang, I just saw this post...yes Saturday was so busy. I was slave labour for a friend at his table and didn't have any time all day to relax...I didn't even get to walk around the tables. It was fun, but I was buggered by 4pm. I didn't go in on Sunday so I missed the quieter day...had time for a brief chat and coffee with Richard and Pete and Barrie. That big guy I was talking to was a collector I haven't seen for 20+ years...lives down Bunbury way I think. I hope you did well John, it is a long way to come for a slow weekend...I wish I'd gone in on Sunday but other family stuff I'm afraid. Your table was superb and I'm sure you had something for all tastes...it sure looked like it...congrats on a great table. Regards, Quote
