blekk Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Hi all, New here and will drop in and say hello but I have a question first. I am looking a shipping a Wakizashi in from Japan but have been told by the seller that He can't ship via EMS and it would have to be via surface mail (1 month or so ) due to international aviation law.... Now not sure if there has been some loss in translation, but I was under the impression there wouldn't be a problem with shipping via EMS to Queensland. Any advice would be greatly appreciated - Now I'm off to the intro section Quote
steve oakley Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Hi I have had a sword shipped using FedEx express out of Japan to Australia and they sorted out the import duty that i had to pay. Nice and easy. This was about 18 months ago. regards Steve Quote
David Flynn Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 I had a sword sent to me from Japan. I was told they couldn't send it EMS, that it would have to come Fedex. However when it arrived, it was via EMS? Quote
Rich Thomas Posted August 11, 2011 Report Posted August 11, 2011 Had one shipped a few weeks ago, Fedex, about 3 days to get here, no dramas only hold up was customs for GST (over $1000) = 5 to 10 days. Make sure you get them to write as description 'Antique over 100 years old'. Description of 'nihonto made by xx circa xx AD' might help get them to look after it. You can put the harmonised tarrif code on but not sure if it makes a difference in Aus. Just search harmonised tarrif code here and the post discussing it all should come up. I gotta fly cheers Rich Quote
Jim P Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 Hi Guys there is no tariff, in Australia the code is no 9706, Antiques of an age exceeding one hundred years its under CUSTOMS TARIFF SCHEDULE 3 R.3 Section 21 Chapter 97/1 CHAPTER 97 Works of art, collectors' pieces and antiques I have the docs in pdf from customs if you don't let them know you will probably pay more, FedEx tacks one on (import duty) from memory Quote
Brian Posted August 12, 2011 Report Posted August 12, 2011 Guys, Top of the For Sale section...never forget this sticky post: viewtopic.php?f=4&t=2299 Darcy put a lot of effort into that, and it is still all valid. Brian Quote

KizuKazu Posted September 30, 2011 Report Posted September 30, 2011 I think it's been pretty well-covered but swords come straight to my front door in Australia. I am in the state of Victoria which has the most strict arms/weapons laws. Swords arrive from Japan or the US and I don't have to pay or do a thing. Not a problem. Simon Quote
hmultimedia Posted July 26, 2012 Report Posted July 26, 2012 Hi Simon, I too am in VIC... and there's nothing special we need to do to get past our "Nanny State" laws? Cheers Matt H Quote
