kusunokimasahige Posted July 12, 2011 Report Posted July 12, 2011 All, The supreme court of Europe has ruled that Ebay as well as other web vendors can be held accountable for selling forged products. http://www.brandrepublic.com/news/10797 ... nterfeits/ While this does not yet affect the scammers and sellers of fake items on ebay the ruling can be seen as a precedent. Surfson Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 I didn't read the whole article, but it specifically referred to counterfeit BRANDED items. Will this only apply to gimei swords? Or no swords at all? Quote
sanjuro Posted July 13, 2011 Report Posted July 13, 2011 This is primarily aimed at the brand name knock offs. Shoes, handbags, clothing etc. Big name brands. I doubt it will have any impact on swords fake, gimei or otherwise. A mei on a nakago is not a brand name that has been registered, so gimei swords are not affected. Unless you are in the market for a genuine Nike, Puma, Gucci, Pucci or Fiorucci Nihonto, or a genuine tsuba made by Yves St Laurent or Hugo Boss, and someone sells you a fake one, then I doubt nihontophiles will see much benefit from this legislation. (if you are in the market for nihonto or tsuba with these brand names, then you need to do a little more study before buying). :D If you do fall into the bracket of buyers described above however, I have an exquisite set of diamond encrusted tosogu made by Christan Dior during the Momoyama period for sale........................ My guess is that Ebay will remain the same old cess pit and newbie trap that it has always been as far as nihonto are concerned. At least while it is there we know where the majority of rubbish and fakes are being dumped. Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted July 13, 2011 Author Report Posted July 13, 2011 I am afraid you are slightly mistaken about the branding of certain Japanese items : For the rest you are right that the scammers and forgers will still affect the buyers (without wit) on ebay.... KM Quote
