Hi, I picked up two tanto blades from a guy who said his dad had picked them up during WW2. My question is ...is the hamon real or faked? Both blades are similar but the hamon & mekugi holes are different. Thank you, Beakner

Hard to tell from the photos exactly what you have here but it would appear the hamon is from a quench rather than etched. Can't say from the photos if it was a traditional water quench-could be oil....

I'd like to see overall pics of the blades...full shots without the habaki.

A few things make me uneasy on these. Yasurime, mekugi ana, shape and the hamon looks like one that was polished on cosmetically.

Hard to tell from those pics alone. More pics of the blades?

Yes sir full size pics would help and it seems the blade is only about 12" long - is this correct? Dimensions would help as well as pictures of the mounts.

These look like many I have seen made in Seki before/during the war....souvenirs, etc.....The nakago look oddly shaped and crude......
