You ask for a translation and get all put out when the pointlessness of your request is pointed out to you. Why would anyone who's made the effort to read mei bother trying to make out this doodle in dog excrement? That you even bothered to look at this thing for more than a second reveals exactly how in need of assistance you are yet you're too arrogant to begin to consider what a liability your ego is to your wallet.
Curran Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 I cannot see the mei particularly well and think I must be seeing the second character wrong, but I am going to hazard that the mei reads: "Goto Teijo (Kao)". Kao of course being the personal mark of the artist. Again, this is a guess partially because of the theme. It this is an exercise to learn reading mei, it is a valid one because Goto signature take some practice. If it is to read the signature to determine value, then I will get off the highroad and take the low road. I would then say this piece is collectible because it looks to be the truest example of fossilized cowpuckey to ever cross ebay; yet actually be Japanese. ***I recently went through eBay just to see what the old stomp grounds are like now. Absolute flea market....Odds of buying something real at a fair price seem to have plummeted. Yet Aoi Arts seems to be upping their prices on mediocre work, and Choshuya recently offered student work at $12,000 where near identical work by the more desirable teacher could be had with the same level of papers for $6000 on this side of the Pacific. It is partially the 50% rise of the yen over the US$ in recent years, but you would do much better to buy from sellers in the USA or Europe if you can negotiate a good price. By this, I don't mean eBay. Once had a bottle of Haut Brion 1989 decanted and enjoyed just right over the course of many hours. Now I can't respect most any other high end Bordeaux, yet can't afford more wine at the level of the Haut Brion 1989. I drank some of my other good bottles, sold the rest or gave a few to close friends. And quit collecting all together. Haven't had a bottle above $65 in years. I would enjoy a good higher end bottle, but not nearly as much as I would have before having had such a transcendent experience. In this regard, I do believe "to forget" is evolutionary beneficial. Sorry..but this translation section is too helpful and rare to have it watered down and abused like this. I don't want this misused for "mei exercises" or "just interested" or any of the other common excuses. If the item isn't educational in a good way, and the translation is on fake/junk..please don't misuse the resources here. This one is so far over the top junk wise..it is simply a waste of time. How many tsuba have you seen with the paint peeling off in large chunks (laquerwork? ) Brian

I'm not sure if you're serious or not but you're actually right. I've got no intention of purchasing this piece of crap, perhaps why I didn't ask for opinions..... I often go thru stuff on ebay and many other websites, as well as photos in books and try to translate the mei. I'm not the best at it and can use all the practice I can get, this mei had me totally screwed, perhaps it's because it's cheap, fraud or whatever I don't know... Perhaps I should have explained better. Damn I just wanted a little help with a translation, never did I say who made this, it looks cool, I think I'll purchase it... Even some of the best artists had dodgy hand writing... This guy obviously wasn't the best artist, lol. Less assumptions would be good people, and perhaps just focus on the task/question/issue at hand. Brian, I'm sorry for trying to improve at reading mei.
Brian Posted June 21, 2011 Report Posted June 21, 2011 I'm not buying it...figuratively speaking. Every time the same thing happens, people say they were trying to improve their translation skills. Sorry...but there are hundreds of websites with thousands of mei if you want to practice translations. Look through the links above. I dont for one second believe that people look through eBay, find bad tsuba (funny...never good ones ) and then try to practise translating. Anyways, this one is done and dusted. Brian
