gtstcactus Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Hey, I know little can be told from the photos but can anyone tell if it's a modern cast repo? If legit, any likely school? Quote
fritaly Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 I'm not an expert but to me it does look cast (the nakago-ana's edges are "rounded" and not sharp) Quote
Lorenzo Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Jason, surely not an authentic piece, but going deeper: Do you notice that by the picture it looks sort of "tapered" in all directions? On the same picture, but other side of the object, same effect. One should now think the piece is tapered on both side and the angled surfaces meet in the middle, but I see no deepness on the pictures provided. On both, the object seems put directly on the wood. To me, surely not a tsuba, and probably not the same object on the two pictures. Quote
Grey Doffin Posted June 13, 2011 Report Posted June 13, 2011 Hi Jason, As a learning experience, hold a real tsuba (or picture of one) next to the picture of this lump of metal, and see how many differences you can find. With a little effort you'll be amazed how far off this is. Grey Quote
gtstcactus Posted June 13, 2011 Author Report Posted June 13, 2011 Thanks for your input guys..... It really does look well ah "wrong" after considering your comments.... Quote
Soshin Posted June 18, 2011 Report Posted June 18, 2011 Jason G., I think Grey's and Lorenzo's and everyone else comments about the tsuba in question are correct. Your tsuba is a modern cast copy. Due to the low quality I would say likely it was made in China or Taiwan. Here is a tsuba from my collection of a similar sukashi (open work) design. Notice the differences discussed by Grey. I think my tsuba is a Shoami tsuba and dates to the late Edo Period. I hope you find the information helpful. Yours truly, David S. Quote
gtstcactus Posted June 19, 2011 Author Report Posted June 19, 2011 Hi David, I don't own that tsuba..... It saw it at a 2nd hand shop...... Your tsuba looks great, certainly much better than the piece in the original post... Quote

I was only referring to the tsuba you started the tread with and wanted to identify. Yours truly, David S. Quote
