I recently purchased and interesting armor item for a friend who was looking for a particular type for quite a while. It just arrived and it was contained in a hitsu with an unusual cover. This is the first red one I can recall seeing, the others have been black. Does anyone know if this would be called a bukuro as in a hitsu bukuro or is there another name. If there is a guess as to the kanji or mon that would be helpful also.

Eric, You have me there, but a lot of 'luggage' boxes had some form of protective cover. I have one of those elaborate cages for an armour box that has a little roof on top. When you put a box in it, the loop handles line up with holes in the cage and roof so that the carrying pole holds it all together. It came without the original roof, but I had a big wide plank of thin cedar so I made one. I never did get around to making all the reinforcing bits of copper the cage itself is covered with. Maybe one day.

Ian, thats another not often seen but formally common item. I have two matching small hitsu with covers and the framework cage with pitched roofs (rain protection?). One cage needs some tlc but I will post pictures next time I can clear enough space to find them.

The leather cover on one of the hitsu's was so tight it took a lot of careful work to remove it and when I finally got the hitsu open this was inside.

Eric, the Kanji on the front, says, wait for it, ... front! Most Yoroi-bitsu have this

character on them.

The Mon is a 16-petal Chrysanthemum, with a leaf design in the center/centre.

Ura-giku? 裏菊
