Ok I'm going to ask for some help...I'm pretty sure the last character is hiro...I'm really having trouble with the first.I'm just not seeing it but I really did try any help out there??

You are right about hiro. take a look at the kanji pages under nihonto, I think you will find the other one there without too much trouble.

I dont know what 私はスレッドの流れは全て理解しています。paulbの教育的指導の事も。says other than having my name in it. I hope it is something pleasant.

My reason for pointing people to the kanji pages is that after nearly 30 years of study I think I am still one of the worst readers of kanji there is. I would hope by encouraging newcomers to try and look before asking they may not have to be as embarassed as I am at my lack of ability so many years on.

I think (my Japanese is so poor) Moriyama san speaks about the difficulty to read Japanese when chinese characters are possibly mixed in.

Thank you very much Morita San..Also to "nobody" for trying to lead men in the right direction.I still don't understand why members feel it's "lazy" ect.to ask for help which is so easy for some to give.If any person, any time or place were to ask me to help then read a word in English my first language; I would feel it would be lazy of me not to help... Maybe us New Yorkers are just that way.. Lol so far the responses were very polite and helpful unlike last time I had asked for some help. So thanks all for your time especially Morita San!!

No, I believe he commented on the difficulty of knowing when to help when there are very difficult kanji together with easier ones.....

My comment actually means …

If the asked kanji is too difficult to read for the questioner and most members who are usually willing to answer, I think I should answer immediately. If the kanji is not so difficult and it can be read with a little effort, I think I should wait until someone respond to the question. But generally it is difficult for me to know when I should respond to the thread, because the difficulty of the kanji sometimes depends on individual’s ability and enthusiasm.

 

For me, immediate response to a question is much easier than waiting and watching the thread to know when I respond. But I am always afraid that my immediate response may obstruct interests of other members who are also trying to read the asked kanji or who are going to answer the question, as well as questioner’s chance to study.

I am also afraid that if I always answer to a question immediately, the thread comes to an end at the time and does not develop to any directions. And this forum will become dull.

 

Old members might remember that there was a 24-hour rule several years ago. Now what do you really want for this forum?

Otherwise, it is a bit like wanting to buy a painting without being able to decipher the signature meaning not knowing what he is buying. Next question being: what is it worth.

As an absolute beginner, I have appreciated it when those in the know have used a "spoiler" to respond to such requests. It allows me as much time as I care to take to attempt a translation on my own.

 

Maybe this is one simple way to solve the question as to when to post "the answer".

 

BTW - I did not see a post of any additional pics. Did I miss this?

Personally, I think we don't need more rules..and I think we (you...the ones who help) are doing a fine job.

It's great when people take a bit of time to attempt a mei. Sometimes they don't manage, sometimes they learn something.

Our main aim here is to educate people..not just throw out advice. Otherwise, we would just go commercial, charge $10 per translation..and share it among those that do the work. :lol: (always an option...) For now, the emphasis is on trying to do the fishing lesson thing..not giving away free fish

Perhaps we should use the

  Reveal hidden contents

function more, that way if someone wants to try the translation, they can click on it afterwards and get the answer. I like the idea of a 24 hour delay, but with timezones and people sometimes needing to make a decision fast, it doesn't have to be a cast-in-concrete rule.

I think those doing the helping are doing a great job, and I'll leave the discression on when and if to answer, up to them.

One thing I do know..without even trying to....I have learned many kanji just by reading posts. The more time you spend attempting mei, the more sinks in.

I think that it is fine the way it happens now, with some spontaneity. As an amateur kanji reader, I like to have a crack at them sometimes. One has to move quickly though, as there are many quick minds on the NMB. Having Morita san as a backup is wonderful. Morita san, I think you approach it perfectly!
