JamesH Posted June 10, 2011 Report Posted June 10, 2011 Hi everyone, I was hoping to get some opinions on this blade: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Old-Japanese ... 415a9d3675 Although it has a part of a hot stamp showing, it has a long mei and , what seems to me, a very interesting hamon. I have asked the seller for some close-up photos of ji, but still waiting for a response. Admin, if we are not to discuss this while auction is running, please lock thread until is ok to do so. With thanks, James Quote
cabowen Posted June 10, 2011 Report Posted June 10, 2011 The blade is inscribed as being made with Yasuki steel. This is not tamahagane, thus it is not traditionally made.... Quote
k morita Posted June 11, 2011 Report Posted June 11, 2011 Hi, In my understanding, the Yasuki-steel was good pure steel made from the iron sand(satetsu). So that, the smith carved it proudly on the tang. Quote
cabowen Posted June 11, 2011 Report Posted June 11, 2011 It is my understanding that Yasuki steel was made as a substitute for tamahagane. It was, as Morita san has explained, a good steel. Sort of a non-traditional tamahagane.... Quote
JamesH Posted June 14, 2011 Author Report Posted June 14, 2011 Thank you cabowen, with the translation of the signture now it makes sense why the hot stamp is present . I guess it is not a gendaito after all - so the hot stamp rule still applies Would yasuki steel still have active ji-hada? I guess I am leading up to the question: would such a piece be worthy of restoring in money terms? Thanks again for your input, I greatly appreciate it. Regards, James Quote
cabowen Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 For the price of restoration you could buy a traditionally made nihonto. That would be a better investment in my mind.... Quote
loiner1965 Posted June 14, 2011 Report Posted June 14, 2011 obviously chris is correct in financial terms but if you like the sword and wish it to look like it should then go for it as long as feasible Quote
mizuta Posted June 19, 2011 Report Posted June 19, 2011 I hade a Asano Kanezane with wo motte Yasuki ko in the signature with showa stamp nice hamon but i could not see any hada. Bernard Quote
JamesH Posted July 5, 2011 Author Report Posted July 5, 2011 Thanks to all who contributed to this discussion, once again I have learned something very valuable on this forum. After some serious contemplation, at the last minute I decided to let this one go. Perhaps if it had some personal meaning to me, I would reconsider, but otherwise I felt I should save my money.
