docliss Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 Can any kind person out there please translate the shumei on the attached katchushi tsuba? With many thanks, John L. Quote
Rich T Posted February 26, 2007 Report Posted February 26, 2007 If there were a little more to it at the top, I would think it said Shoami with Kao. Looks more like a name than a school though but I would expect a shumei to be an attribution before a mei proper. Maybe the maker signed this way, it is tough to read.. What's the lacquer look like up close, s it transparent ?, can you do a close up of it please ? it is not that common to have shumei on a tsuba. Best Rich Quote
docliss Posted February 27, 2007 Author Report Posted February 27, 2007 Dear Rich Thank you for your reply to my query. The Shoami suggestion is an interesting one; the Haynes catalogue, #4, lot no 1022, illustrates an almost identical tsuba, albeit of a reduced size, and states 'KATCHUSHI IN KO-SHOAMI STYLE - the whole feeling is Shoami, but the plate is thin as Katchushi'. The lacquer is an opaque, rich red; I will try to post an enlarged image of the shumei. Regards, John L. Quote
Rich T Posted February 27, 2007 Report Posted February 27, 2007 Hello John, yes, that is an interesting comparison. The guard could well be Katchushi, or one made in that style I guess. Further study would be prudent. I have a Sadahiro tsuba with a shumei attribution also. A good scanner picks up the particle and bubble in the lacquer quite well. It is interesting to look at. I have attached a scan. Kind regards Richard Turner [/img] Quote
