Leonard Posted May 18, 2011 Report Posted May 18, 2011 Greetings, and I thank you for your time To the best of my ability ( not exactly up there ) I believe these shakudo menuki to be of the Goto school and in a rice flower / bud motif???? Any comments to my accuracy and or the quality of these menuki would be appreciated. Leonard Quote
ububob Posted May 18, 2011 Report Posted May 18, 2011 I am far from an expert on menuki and Goto work in particular but your pieces do not show the level of detail and craftsmanship usually associated with Goto work. Just an opinion and worth exactly what you paid for it. Quote

Henry Wilson Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 Not an expert too, but they look Kinko. Quote
Toryu2020 Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 Leonard - First off, not bad. Not great either but the image is uncommon enough that they are a pleasure to see just because they are different. As stated the immediate impression is that the quality is not first rate but there aren't a lot of those floating around undiscovered anyway. Goto themes and Goto style was copied all over the country by generations of artists so Goto-esque is not such a bad call even if no school is apparent. Pics of the back would be cool. And I think your theme is Myoga - ginger, but I could be wrong... -t Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 Tom has the theme correct, a shouga or myouga茗荷 plant (leaves and flower). I wonder why Goto was pulled out of the hat for these menuki? Have you seen this theme published as Goto somewhere? John Quote
Leonard Posted May 19, 2011 Author Report Posted May 19, 2011 From Leonard, Bob, Chris, Henry, Thomas, John, sincere thanks for your time and input. Your observations provide so much guidance and inspiration to keep learning it's difficult to put the proper thanks to words. Sincerly, Leonard Quote
Toryu2020 Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 Leonard you are most welcome - @John I think the original post had these as Goto - I think if you look at the presentation of the leaves you can almost see the gold dots of dew, also you've got gold, copper and shakudo - not Goto I'm thinking but under the influence anyway... -t Quote
John A Stuart Posted May 19, 2011 Report Posted May 19, 2011 Hi Tom, What kinko artist wasn't 'under the influence', Ha, in more ways than one. But, yes, hard to tell what school. I should like to own them in any event. John Quote
