kusunokimasahige Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 Came across this Wakizashi tsuba, chicken themed. Decided it would be my first. It depicts a chicken on a rice straw bale i think... its supposed to be Edo. Whether or not the branch and leaf carvings were at one time inlaid with silver i would not know. There is some gold inlay left. I quite like it. See below for the photos i took. Any opinions always welcome. KM Quote
Surfson Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 I have a hard time seeing the chicken, but I do see the evidence of a cat (probably yours?). Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted April 23, 2011 Author Report Posted April 23, 2011 The photos i originally posted were the ones i got from the auction itself, when it has arrived i will post others Quote
Surfson Posted April 23, 2011 Report Posted April 23, 2011 Maybe the auction house has a guard cat. Quote
sanjuro Posted April 24, 2011 Report Posted April 24, 2011 Perhaps the photo was one from a catalogue.......... Sorry, that was a very paw joke.... :D Quote
Tanto54 Posted April 24, 2011 Report Posted April 24, 2011 I think that this is a Torii (cock) on a Taiko (drum) motif (a fairly common theme in Japanese Art) and signifies a time of peace (drums were used regularly in war, so a cock roosting on a drum shows that it is not getting much use). Regards, George M. Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted April 24, 2011 Author Report Posted April 24, 2011 Thank you George for clearing that up, i see what you mean. The rooster is more likely anyway looking at the tail feather carving, as is the Taiko drum. KM Quote
