Thanks for the reporting Junichi,

Never see before a silver plated shingunto fittings!

I think this is a work of some vet after the war and not a custom koshirae,

but i can mistake. The navy tassel instead military one seem strange too.

But if the vet, or who for he, have done the work i can't explain

how paint the menuki in silver without take if off and rewrap the Ito

on the tsuka ?!?

In anyway $ 2,325 is crazy!

I actually think the menuki is not silver, just worn off gold? another reason why this points towards a fantasy piece. I mean the blade is clearly seki stamped, so the bidders were just looking at the sliver mounts?

Yes if you look well to menuki they appears like silver defoliation.

Strange days this. The peoples look to koshirae instead the blade and tosho than have made it.

Seki blade is not a sign of bad blade, think to Kanefusa work or similiar, but the conditions and

geometries of this pieces make you shout Arghhhh!!!

I think if you get a lot of good koshirae and put inside it a lot of medriocre/bad sword you will

get the deal of your life! :D

If anything, the color of the menuki would be the one indicator whether the silver plating/painting was done post war or if its original to the gunto mounts. As mentioned earlier, its the one piece that would the most difficult to remove, and the tsuka wrapping looks untouched.

Anyhow, me thinks its gold, but it could be the lighting. If it were silver-colored, then the mounts possibly wouldn't be a complete fake, but still, crazy $$$.

The menuki look to be rather worn gold coloured ones, indicating that they haven't been touched.

My guess? Someone has cleaned all the various fittings back, then treated them with an instant silver plate solution, of the sort that you can buy at the hardware store. Such solutions work exceptionally well on copper and copper alloys. Works on iron too, as long as you deposit copper on it, which isn't too difficult. It would be possible to do the menuki as well; however even with the lightest touch it would probably leave some staining on the ito.
