kaigunair Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 I know the fittings are interesting, but is there something to the blade? Its mumei but I thought it was gunto vs gendaito...does the little interruption in the suguha hamon at the end signify gendaito? I'm confused... http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280648838110&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT Quote
pcfarrar Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 Just a poor quality oil tempered blade with an acid polish. Quote
Bruno Posted April 4, 2011 Report Posted April 4, 2011 Looks like a Showa22's sword. Same kind of acid cleaned blade. Quote

I've only recently been doing more reading of this board...i'm guessing the idea of acid washing was discussed in an older thread? Its new to me, so I guess I'll be hitting the search function to read up more on this.... Quote

kaigunair Posted April 5, 2011 Author Report Posted April 5, 2011 so, it was all about the fittings then.... Quote

patrick7813 Posted April 5, 2011 Report Posted April 5, 2011 I suspect it’s a combination of both the appearance of the blade and quality of the mounts, especially the rarity of the extended drag ishizuke. I’ve seen swords with that extended drag (both Navy and Army) command higher than normal prices. I will also add that I’ve seen many recent sword sales on eBay generate much higher prices ($3-$4k range, I suspect again based upon appearance IMHO), than the sword warrants especially given the non-exceptional smiths that forged the blades. Cheers, Quote
kaigunair Posted April 5, 2011 Author Report Posted April 5, 2011 thanks for the replies. I've been wondering about the prices too. probably due to the fact that Japan has been in the news, a strong euro, a weak dollar, and maybe b/c of tax returns here in the US. There was also a nice set of unusual fittings (manchurian railway) with no blade that sold for what I thought was an interesting price, but I kinda figured it would due to recent and weird prices of the dirks and machine made blades recently... gab72 Posted April 6, 2011 Report Posted April 6, 2011 Auction now is over and I can see only the main pic of the sword. In anyway for me it look like a stainsteel blade or likely of same. Nice koshirae all covered of same but the price is crazy for this kind of sword. Militaria collectors are mad in this times! Quote
