I'm just curious about the cost of submitting blades for shinsa at the Sydney event. Also if one is unable to attend is there anyone who can / will submit the blade for you? (and how much is such a service if available)

Jason, Adrian Schlemmer who is orginising the Shinsa is in hospital at the moment with complications brought about by pneumonia. However, he is attempting to get a price in Yen for the submissions. At the last shinsa, the cost was $150 au for submission and a futher $150 for the pass. I have actually been thinking of how we may be able to offer the service of submitting pieces for others. I will broach the topic with Adrian when the chance arises. Also, at the last shinsa, most who didn't attend, sent their sword and fittings with friends.

David,

Thanks for that, gives me a ball park figure to think about. I don't have any friends to submit for me. My sister lives in Sydney but no way would she do it!

Be awesome if you can submit for people that can't attend!

I to was thinking if this service was available to have a katana put before the Shinsa team. I am not in a position to attend at Sydney but am in Melbourne. It looks as if you may have two customers if a service was offered.

I have spoken to Adrian, unfortunately he believes we will be too busy to accept consignments. However, now that this has been broached on this forum, maybe someone coming to the shinsa will offer this service. Also, we should start to take bookings in the next couple of weeks.

Hi all,

I'm also unable to attend this year and would be very grateful if someone from the Canberra area was in a position to submit on my behalf.

Adrian is now out of hospital and looking forward to getting the ball rolling. An announcement on booking slots will be posted soon. As they say in advertising, Watch This Space!

Hi Folks,

Yes, I'm up and about. Thanks for the kind wishes from so many of my friends on this forum and Facebook etc.

As for those of you who would like to submit swords and fittings to the Sydney NTHK Shinsa and cant make it along. Unfortunately the organizers can not accept unaccompanied pieces for Shinsa. But all is not lost. I've already spoken to some of the dealers attending the Shinsa and they will soon be offering this service for a handling fee. I'd like to call on them to also post here if they can offer this service. I would also suggest that local interstate groups will be helping out in this regard as they did last time. Ask around your nihonto friends and see if anyone can put you onto someone local to you who could help. Keep in mind that letting someone else handle your valuable items is always a risk, in my opinion make an extra effort and come along, you won't regret it.

Hi all, I was approached by both David and Adrian to take on the job of

receiving and returning blades and tosogu sent to us for submission to the Sydney Shinza.

Upon consideration of the consequeces of some valued piece going astray

in Australia Post and the liability that would follow it has been decided not to do this.

If you wished to send these items to some trusted friend or relative here in Sydney

who would hand them to us we would ensure their safe passage through Shinza and

return to them to be returned to you.

Hello all,

having never been to Shinsa before could someone please post the protocol for presentation of blades. Are they presented bare or in Koshirae or in some other manner?

I intend attending and presenting a sword.

Thank you kindly

Markc :)

G'day Mark,

Blades are submitted bare, even the habaki is removed. There will be provision made for a place to strip the swords. There will also be someone there, possibly me :D to help with submitting blades. For those submitting Koshirae, you may use your sword as a Tsunagi, however, if you are submitting both, a wooden tsunagi should be used.

Hello all,

For those of you who live in Australia and NZ who are thinking of not

coming to the Sydney Shinza, you are going to miss a unique and possibly

the last big get together of Japanese sword collectors and good dealers

under one roof for 2 whole days plus the social side after the show with

old and new friends. Before the last Shiza 2 years ago you had to go to

Japan to the DTI with Robert Hughes's party booked out well in advance

because it is just such a great event and the people you meet become life long

friends.

I'm lucky because I move in a small circle of good sword collectors from all around

the country Sydney ,Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane I get all the gossip news fist hand

so don't miss this opportunity to extend your collectors circle it will not happen to

often here on such a good scale. There will also be some Juyo class red wine.

Alan, you have raised some wonderful points regarding the meeting of other collectors at the Sydney Shinsa. Not only is this going to be the highlight of Nihonto collecting in Australia and New Zealand, but the whole southern hemisphere. So far, except for the last show in Sydney in 09, this is the only Show and Shinsa (that I'm aware of) that has been anywhere south of the equator.

Also the point you made about social contacts within the collecting community is true. I alone was able to meet some wonderful people, that in other circumstances, would have been nigh impossible.

The fact that this show, isn't just about papering, buying and selling Nihonto, is what will help make the occasion so enjoyable. The social interaction of bringing together so many people with the same likes, make us a fraternity.

I am truly looking forward again, to meeting the people who made the last show such a success. Also, the opportunity, of making some new friends from Australia, as well as our international guests.

I can't hide the fact, of how excited I am of attending this major event. Also, I hope that even more collectors and traders from overseas will attend and make this show an even greater success, than the last.

Does any one know if the Powerhouse Museum in Sydney have any of their Japanese armor, swords on display at about the time of the Sydney Shinsa?

I seem to remember attending a JSS of Australia meeting in Sydney many years ago and a lady from the Museum brought some photo's to the meeting showing armor etc, that they had.

It would be good to go and see before or after the Shinsa finishes if available, and it also looks close to the Shinsa function hotel.

thanks

G'day John, unfortunately, the Powerhouse don't look after their Japanese stuff very well. Adrian orginised a viewing many years ago, attended by myself and Alan Morton as well as some others who escape me. The viewing was held in a room where items were brought in. These items had been neglected and were not very impressive. Further communication has been sought by Adrian. The Powerhouse, now appears to have little enthusiasm with their Japanese collection and little or no time for any sort of display. Adrian had even approached them about the last shinsa/show and there was absolutely no interest.

thanks for the info David, now that's a shame, I seem to remember that one suit of armor was given by someone in Japan to the Governor of NSW about 100 years ago, now if they don't want it!, and are giving it away...............................

John, you might like to check out the swords at the Art Gallery of NSW instead. These belong to a group of Melbourne collectors and are well worth a visit.

Hi all,

as Justin says the exhibition at the Art Gallery of NSW is not to be missed.

It is put together by a group of Melbourne collectors Colin McDonald, Bazza,

and a few other collectors.

All items are of high quality, swords in full polish, good tsuba and excellent

koshirae. It is on permanent display and is changed about every 6 months.

Last Shiza Colin took a group over there and gave a talk, maybe this time

to?

G'day All,

Never is a long time. I will be happy to organize a future Shinsa but it will depend on demand, interest and economic situation at the time.
