Hey folks,

I am new here, so please forgive me if this has been done before.

I was wondering, as collectors and enthuisiasts, would you rather wield the blade or forge it.

Myself, can't imagine anything as satisfying as creating one.

Hi John,

More DaVinci than Michelangelo?

I suspect the remarkable amount of time needed to acquire the skills would negate proficiency in both.

Wonder if there are any historical examples of dual masters.

Toryu may well have it right.

Hmmph,

Being now in my 60's I no longer wield my sword with the proficiency I did as a younger man, nor nearly as often  If given the chance to forge one, .... I would undoubtably have gone for forging a No-dachi rather than a tanto

David, I would think Emperor Go-Toba could be considered as both, possibly not a 'master', but highly involved.

As for me I would tend toward the smithy, but I would also want to at least have a diligent interest in swordsmanship to better understand how to craft the sword.

Having wielded one for most of my adult life, and having collected them for almost as long, it would I think be most satisfying to craft one... A sort of rounding out of the nihonto experience on a very personal level.

On the question of dual masters, I think that most accomplished Kaji would also have been quite accomplished sword wielders also. They would have at the very least needed to test some of their own blades. The physical and technical requirements of a blade are nowhere more evident than in the use of a blade.

David P. Am I the Bob you addressed that question to? Or as Pacino might have said - "you talkin' to me?". If so, yes, I am interested in waves of the Hokusai sort. Just back from Maui a few weeks ago and got my first taste of winter surf in Hawaii. If you're not talkin to me, many apologies. If you are, where have we met? Cheers, Bob
