kusunokimasahige Posted March 18, 2011 Report Posted March 18, 2011 I would like to offer my sincere apologies to the Japanese people for our Dutch government who in their ultimate "wisdom" decided to donate 1.000.000 Euro to the relief efforts in Japan. Its a disgrace. KM Quote

Death-Ace Posted March 18, 2011 Report Posted March 18, 2011 This is hard to believe. We in America had Katrina a few years back, but it appears to be a pinch from nature compared to this. We really all need to do something. I just feel ashamed that when they were taking donations, I didn't have a penny on me to donate... Does anyone know of any volunteer groups who are heading over now and taking people or if US citizens can go abroad? May be a naive request, but I wasn't able to help in Katrina, but I want to now. cabowen Posted March 19, 2011 Report Posted March 19, 2011 Just a short post to give some on the ground news... Arrived in Japan on Tuesday. Airport deserted. Few trains. Managed to make it to my destination in Shizuoka without incident. Big earthquake that evening, thankfully I had been drinking some good sake and laughed it off....Been here 4 days now and here in western Shizuoka life is little changed. East of here, only 30 minutes or so by shinkansen, things are completely different...they are having rolling blackouts and minimal train service as they are trying to trim electricity usage. Lots of aftershocks still. People nearer the center of the destruction are still suffering shortages of food, gasoline, etc. News coverage is non-stop....Biggest fear is still radiation from the reactors in Fukushima. My wife and son are at my inlaws which is only 100 kilometers from Fukushima. If it gets any worse they will leave for a relative`s place...the sakura are beginning to bloom with a special poignancy... Quote
John A Stuart Posted March 26, 2011 Report Posted March 26, 2011 I received this today. John SALE OF ICONIC WHISKY AT BONHAMS EDINBURGH TO AID Japanese QUAKE AND TSUNAMI VICTIMS The sale of a £13,000 bottle of Gordon & MacPhail Generations Glenlivet 70 Years Old, launched earlier this month, is to be auctioned at a special evening at Bonhams, Edinburgh on 29 March in aid of the victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Family owned whisky specialists Gordon & MacPhail unveiled the iconic Single Malt Whisky at Edinburgh Castle on 8 March. Distilled in 1940, only 100 full sized decanters have been released for sale in 2011. Decanter number 1 of 100 has been presented for this special event. Michael Urquhart, Joint Managing Director of Gordon & MacPhail, had been due to fly to Japan to launch the whisky when the tragedy struck. He had the idea of auctioning the bottle in Scotland to raise much needed money for the relief effort. The proceeds will be donated to the British Red Cross Japan Appeal. The special, single item, charity auction will be held at Bonhams, 22 Queen Street, Edinburgh on Tuesday evening 29 March at 7.00pm GMT to allow buyers in the USA and the Far East to take part. Bonhams are giving their services for free. Michael Urquhart said, "Gordon & MacPhail has had trading relationships with Japan for over thirty years and members of our family-owned business felt it was important to show our support and raise funds to aid the relief. I think we all feel helpless in the face of a tragedy like this so it is good to be able to do something practical. I hope people will respond generously." Bonhams Managing Director in Scotland, Miranda Grant, who lived in Japan as a child, said, "We're just pleased to be able to help. Everyone has been shocked by the scenes of devastation and the loss of life and we're all hoping to raise a good sum." Norman McKinley, director of the Red Cross in Scotland, said, "This is an extremely generous gesture by Gordon & MacPhail and Bonhams. The massive earthquake and resulting tsunami that struck Japan have caused widespread destitution and suffering. "The costs of the relief effort and of rebuilding the homes and lives of those affected will be immense. Donations to the British Red Cross will be used towards helping the Japanese people recover from this devastating natural disaster over the coming months and years." The charity auction itself will be preceded by a reception at 6.00 and a talk at 6.40 by the renowned whisky connoisseur Charles Maclean. Equinox Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 an update well its May here now in Tochigi prefecture, (Fukushima's south and slightly western neighbour). Life is slowly returning to normal after the quake, the black outs ended a few weeks back. Aftershocks, it seems strange to call them such there pretty big still, are now down to about two a week here. Food is, for the most part, back to normal and a lot of people went away for the annual golden week of public holidays, many many people volenteered up north to move wreckage and help in the clean up effort. The nuclear power situation is hard to judge but it seems to be contained at the moment. The locals seem to be taking it all in their stride for the most part and many of them are telling interesting stories about what they were doing when the quake hit. (my favorite come from the owner of the local sword shop who went around putting his most valuble blades into their shirasaya midquake i'm truly amazed he didn't cut his hand of). The news here is also showing stories about the quake area and its progress, schools going back and the empoers visit got a lot of coverage as well as the horrific amount of debris still remaining. The signs of the quake still linger however roof tile repairmen are booked solid for the next year I've been told, so there are many houses sporting blue tarpolins on their rooves. In the quake area the local governments are estimating a minimum of ten years to rebuild totally and people are being encorage to relocate to higher ground where possible. well thats about it for the Japan update, I'll try to keep posting in the comming months. regards David Quote
Stone Posted May 11, 2011 Report Posted May 11, 2011 Thank you, Please do keep updating. Best Regards, Tony N. Quote
Equinox Posted July 6, 2011 Report Posted July 6, 2011 An Update We'll is summer in Japan now and the heat and humidity have begun to climb once more here in Tochigi. The damage north is slowly being cleaned up in the news a couple of weeks back they highlighted the mamoth task of moving all the beached boats back to the ocean. while there are no blackouts everybody has been asked to keep electricity usage to a minimun and espcially not to use air conditioners if possible. so far its working and the government hasn't resorted to blackouts again, thankfully. while many refugees have been relocated many are still in shelters awaiting temorary housing. The reconstruction minister resigned this week after making several political gafs so now we will have to wait and see who will replace him. there isn't a lot else to report on here at the moment other than the primeminister is once again on tenderhooks and will likly resign in august. well hope that helps keeps you guys informed regards always David Quote
