I have just heard about this right now from clients. Please will our Japan members please check in when they get a chance and let us know that they are ok, and update us on the situation there.

Our thoughts go out to everyone and those that have family there.

It took me quite some time to get through to my daughter - she's "stranded" in Ikebukuro since all trains and subways suspended operations. Hope she'll make it back home to Kôenji safely ...

Sad news indeed, watching it now on CNN as well as the Dutch tv. Sendai area hit by 10 mtr tsunami,

fires in some industrial areas, 8.9 earthquake 135 km off the coast, power outtage in Tokyo and other places.

Pacific area on Tsunami alert because of the scale of the quake.

Old people, handicapped and kids feared amongst the casualties.

Lets hope most will be safe. My thoughts are with them.

Good luck to all the NMB members in Japan - let's hope none of you need it. I think a lot of people with breathe easier once everyone's confirmed OK.

As another thought, however, what of artefacts? I've heard one or two grim rumours of museums being hit by either the quake or the tsunami and their respective effects. Obviously details will be slow in coming, but one can only hope that the treasures of Japan's history are safe for future generations.

My thoughts go out to the people in Japan that are affected, as well as the people who have relatives, friends,.... over there!

Take care - 気をつけて

Heard a friend of mine living in Warabi (tokyo) and he tells me he is fine, but he has been suggested to keep out of his house for the moment. Some other quakes are happening.

Hoping to hear from Koichi, Henry, Morita San.....plus the rest of our Japan based friends.

Please keep this thread open for any news and updates.

Apparently severe aftershocks are still being felt in Tokyo and as Guido said all trains and subways have suspended operations. Buses are operating but traffic jams are making progress very slow.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Japanese people affected as well. I stayed in Sendai for 6 weeks as a visiting professor and it is overwhelming to see the devastation occurring in the region. Bob

Got a call at 4:00am from my sayashi in Aichi with the news. Due to fly to Japan on Monday-not sure were that will go...haven't been able to get through to my in-laws in Tochigi....terrible indeed....

Anyone know whats happening in Chiba prefecture? News is only filtering through very slowly. Understandsble under the circumstances I guess, but may heaven protect the people of Japan. This is the worst natural disaster they have been called upon to endure.

Just terrible...what a calamity. Out hopes and prayers go out to the people of Japan. I see Aomori is hit so I hope Morita san is OK...also Moriyama san in Tokyo. My daughter in Hyogo is quite safe, but friends in Tochigi/Ibaraki are damaged, but thankfully they are physically safe so far.

Hope to hear all members in Japan are OK.

Tragic!!! Japan, Hawaii, West Coast maybe and others, this could be really horrible after everything is done. The Pacific ring is so vulnerable. I hope for the minumum in suffering for all those effected. John

My daughter made it finally back home after a 4 hours walk. Chaos in her apartment, but nothing valuable broken. No cell phone reception yet, but we skyped and she's doing fine. My inlaws, too, escaped unharmed with just a few broken dishes and other minor damage.

People on the West coast of the Americas still have to brace for the Tsunami that is going to hit them in a couple of hours, but at least they can prepare themselves. I experienced a couple of strong quakes while living in Japan, but nothing of this magnitude. Waiting for hours to get news from loved ones in Japan really took a toll on my wife and me - I have to admit that I'm now not entirely sober anymore ....

That is good news Guido, thank goodness. I hope we continue to hear such news from everyone.

This news is horrible indeed. I was shocked when opened my newspage with my first cup of coffee to see this. All our prayers and wishes for safety for everyone in Japan and those around the Pacific Rim that yet might potentially be affected by the resulting tsunami threat.

A friend in Tokyo has a blog and he wrote that the damage was minimal given the magnitude of the quake. Shelters are opening up all over. Trains and subways shut down. Vending machines dispensing food and drinks for free, electronics stores offering free recharging of cell phones. Power and water are still working in Tokyo apparently.

Again, my prayers and wishes for all our members, families, friends, and especially those most directly in the path.

Dear All,

I'd just like to post some helplines for anyone who is worried about their friends or relatives in Japan at this time.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) has set up a helpline for anyone affected by the disaster or worried about friends and relatives. The number is 020 7008 0000.

You can also call the British embassy in Tokyo on 81 3 5211 1100 and the Osaka Consulate on +81 6 6120 5600.

The number for the main FCO switchboard is 020 7008 1500.

Google have also launched a version of their person finder tool, as they did in the Haiti and Christchurch earthquakes. You can access the application here.

We hope that you, and your friends and family in Japan, are all safe. Our thoughts are with all those affected at this time.

Kind regards,

A disaster of epic proportions. Our hearts and hopes go to all those effected. Also heard that 4 nuclear power plants were effected; all shut

down, but one has problems with getting coolant to the reactor. No radiation leaks reported. A true tragedy; let's hope for the best.

Those in Japan, who can, please let us know how you are and what

conditions are.

Back from office. I had first hour yhis morning Guido and Robet Hughes (who is living in Kamakura) by mail. His first words were:

"Very scary, house rocked like boat on rough sea

All power out"

Seems his family and himself are OK
