gtstcactus Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 I'm thinking of purchasing this Katana.... It was mounted for WWII but has had it's original Tsuba, seppa etc put back on, also has non military menuki... Pics included... Any info / comments etc welcome.... Can any info be gained from the pics? Quote
gtstcactus Posted February 27, 2011 Author Report Posted February 27, 2011 last pic...... The hamon is apparently visible at the boshi but the war time polish makes it a bit hard to see it all. Quote
Brian Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 Nothing about this sword instills any great confidence in me. Can't see anything particularly interesting about it, except for the fact that it is very, very straight. Even more so than I would expect from Kanbun Shinto (which it isn't) Fittings are junk imho. The nakago shape isn't too bad, otherwise I would have perhaps considered a fake here. Straight enough to have possibly once been a "cane sword" or shikomizue which were usually not of much merit. Unless the price is dirt cheap, I would pass on it. Brian Quote

It's part of a 2 sword deal.... this was one I was only buying as it is sold with the wakizashi I've started a thread on... Also forgot to ad this: The minuki are shakado and gold of a samurai with sword and bow look very nice the habaki is a two peace type in copper that was once gold plated Quote
Jean Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 An average blade at most, more probably an utilitarian one as ten thousands were forged during centuries Quote
Jean Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 A bit expensive, because the handle/tsuka is not very good, F/K are less than average the blade is not a great one - tell tale is the crudeness of the yasurime, it is not an old one. Now, I understand your problem, the real questions are the following : How old are you? how much are you ready to invest in a blade? can you wait? Quote

I wondered how long the age thing would take to come up..... I am younger than many of you..... I am 31, so a baby in many of your eyes.... I find spending money on my interests hobbies stops me wasting it on more frivolous things.... yes I have a problem saving (bad childhood lessons with money).... If I hold on to money I'll do something stupid like buy a $300 dollar cactus, spend it on poker machines, drugs, alcohol, junk food, etc etc So maybe I'm just doomed to have "uninteresting / low grade swords" I'm being honest so please stop just give me a break..... Jean Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 My friend, the solution is obvious. Do as you want and stop asking question/advice. My question about age was simple: were you aged you could feel in desesperate need of owning a Nihonto. Quote I wondered how long the age thing would take to come up..... I am younger than many of you..... I am 31, so a baby in many of your eyes.... Unfortunately, being wise has nothing to do with age, I know foolish elderly people and know a lot of younger people much wiser than you. Time has nothing to do with wiseness as was saying Georges Brassens  Quote

David Flynn Posted February 27, 2011 Report Posted February 27, 2011 Obtaining advice from low quality pics on low quality swords is frustrating at best. There will be a shinsa and show in Sydney, early Sept. Buy what you like and bring them to the shinsa. Or study more save some money and see what's available at the show. Quote

sanjuro Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Gentlemen. Isnt this all getting rather circular? Low quality swords + high quality advice + Inability to take the advice = more low quality swords? Quote

Many of the wise members here tell me nothing much can be attained from the crappy photos I've got available to me at the moment, so can we really say for sure they are low quality swords? I'm going to have a look at 3 of them on Thursday, I will try and get some better pictures in the hope of facilitating a better conversation about them. Quote
moss Posted February 28, 2011 Report Posted February 28, 2011 Jason, What David said makes sense....... Shinsa in Sydney in September, plenty to look at and learn. With airfares as low as they are pre-book now and for less than a big night on the slops you will have a nice weekend away. Much cheaper than a stab in the dark with ebay or online sites. Cheers Moss Quote
