Toryu2020 Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Kusunoki-san Regarding "de Gansu"; I was gonna say this was Kagoshima-ben but looked it up, you must be talking about Tasogare Seibei which is set in Shonai (Iwate) and not "Last" which is set in a weird Japanland not actually found on our planet... -t Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 True, i was talking about a Japanese film, not about the horrendous hollywood flick distorting Samurai history. KM Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Well, I enjoyed Braveheart, despite the unforgiveably clumsy muddling of 100 years of people and dates. (Arthur was a step too far, though...) In the same way, I enjoyed The Last Samurai. It's the emotion that counts, so there! (Besides, my family on my mother's side are descended from the brother of Robert The Bruce so I hate to see him vilified.) (Plus, one of my students, Shin Koyamada, played Nobutada in Last Samurai and flew around in Tom Cruise's private jet, so how could I not like the film???) Quote
Ian Posted May 31, 2011 Report Posted May 31, 2011 Quote True, i was talking about a Japanese film, not about the horrendous hollywood flick distorting Samurai history. It's easy. When you have no history, you just make it up! Quote
w.y.chan Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Come on admit it.... How many of you got into Japanese swords after watching Highlander Quote

w.y.chan Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 I've been away too long plus its a bit quiet No point creating new threads when there is perfectly old ones around. Anyway about the new Wolverine film. Sanada with a sword appears on every Hollywood movies about Japan these days. Quote
kusunokimasahige Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 To answer this, I got into the Samurai through a Book, and later when I was a little older through the Series "Shogun". Quote
w.y.chan Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 I had the mick taken in school playground everyday when Shogun was on TV. My Geography teacher was a Japanophile and talks about it everyday. There was an English guy with a Japanese wife who lives near me. Everytime the couple goes out he doesnt want to be seen with her, she is at least 20 paces behind him, but when Shogun started airing on UK TV during the early 80s the couple began going out arms around each other. Such is the power of television. I believe they are now divorced. Quote
Stephen Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 lived on the Rock, TV was Samurai soaps, no westerns Quote

Alex A Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 The sale of imitation nihonto blossomed during the running of that show, i was guilty, still have it. still looks cool :D Alex. Quote
Moley Posted September 18, 2013 Report Posted September 18, 2013 Hi Guys, Still along this thread. It really annoys me when Arthur is portrayed as English with a cross hilted sword called Excaliber and with some first knight called Launcelot. To me, Arthur is Romano Briton with a Spatha/(maybe even an earlier incarnation with a leaf shaped sword called Caledfwlch) and the remnants of a heavy horse cavalry battling against the Angles and the Saxons who eventually were to become the English. For those of you familiar with the Jack Reacher books by Jim Grant aka Lee Childs. Jack Reacher is 6' 5", with a 50-inch chest and weighs in around 210 - 250 pounds and he was a military police Major, Hollywood casted Tom Cruise Quote
