tagonagy Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 I was under the impression that non traditionally made Gunto were illegal in Japan. However, I came across this: http://www.e-sword.jp/sale/2011/1110_1022syousai.htm It looks like the sword has a seki stamp, which I thought meant a non-traditionally made blade; and it has registry certificate, which I thought was only issued to traditionally made blades. Daniel Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 I guess sometime a mistake happen when they register a blade. I have a seki stamped blade signed Asai Yasutsuna with torokusho. Regards Daniel Quote
george trotter Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 I know of one Mantetsuto in a collection in Japan...I assume it has a torokusho. I did not think these could be owned or traded, but Usagiya sometimes offers sunobe gunto, although I can't recall any stamps on them...I suppose this is a case of never say never... The tsuka has two holes for peg, but nakago only has one...? George. Quote
cabowen Posted February 24, 2011 Report Posted February 24, 2011 I was at a prefectural licensing one time with a few WWII era traditionally made swords. The fellow supervising from the ministry of education didn't have a clue about the laws or swords. I spent quite a while arguing with him after he told me the couldn't license anything with a showa date. Then right in front of me, they gave a license to an older guy with a showa stamped gunto. When I asked why they just licensed a known non-traditionally made blade, they said because it had sentimental value to the owner as it was the sword he carried in the war.....At that point I pulled out the booklet the NBTHK use to sell that contained the statutes and pointed out exactly what the rules were. I got my licenses and this story illustrates that sometimes even stamped swords get registered as well.... Quote
