dirk marshall Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Hi as I am frequently bored, I purchase rusted tsubas to clean. This is such the strange thing is the finish which in place appears to almost be solder or plating although it is neither. Any ideas on what causes this? The tsuba appears to be a forged plate. Soshin Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Hi Dirk, It might be damage from a fire. Just an idea as I haven't seen many tsuba damaged by fire but the surface and patina does look strange. Yours truly, David S. Quote
dirk marshall Posted February 10, 2011 Author Report Posted February 10, 2011 When I bought it i thought it was cast but in hand i have my doubts. I got it with a classic armorers tsuba with the amida file work that also has hints of the same finish flaws. This one is better then it looks the finish not as glaringly wrong as pictured and attributed to my poor picture taking skills. I haven't cleaned it enough to get a good feel for the finish on the plate, but the silver flecks are anoying. I will still clean it just cause it is something i like to do. I was thinking of fire damage as well, i have one that was firedamaged but the finish on the wole plate is consistantly flat and grey so that is why i questined this. The plate as a solid ring unlike the flat sound a cast plate has. Thanks Dirk Quote
goose710 Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 The discoloration looks like it's only on the high spots could've been sanwicthed between something like tin foil and a transfer happened. my guess charles l grusovnik Quote
