Bruno Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Hi all, I was wondering when a blade is suriage if one can see the core steel of the blade at the extremity of the cutted nakago? It makes sense to me but as I do not own such a blade, does any owner can confirm or not please? Thanks Quote
SwordGuyJoe Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Bruno, I have seen a number of suriage blades and the nakago is complete covered in aged rust/patina, including the extremity, making seeing that type of detail impossible to see. Your thought holds water, but the shortening would need to be so recent that the corrosion hasn't spread to the 'open' part of the blade. Quote
Bruno Posted February 9, 2011 Author Report Posted February 9, 2011 Thanks for your reply Joe. Yes patina must hides the core steel, you are totally right. However if someone has one which a visible core steel, I would love to see what it is looks like. Quote

Mark Green Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 Hi Bruno, I took some pics of one of my cut down swords a while back. It looks like jacket, and core steel looking from the mune side of the new nakago. viewtopic.php?f=1&t=7503&start=30 Quote
Muki Posted February 9, 2011 Report Posted February 9, 2011 I believe you can see the core in this photo... Quote
Peter Bleed Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 I am sure that what you are seeing is not "core steel" but simply the remnant of a shortened tang. The edges were cut part way thru and then the nakago was snapped - and partially smoothed. Peter Quote
Surfson Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 There was a metallographic study of this that I have seen. A guy cut a number of swords and looked at the crystal structure of the cut surface. I can't remember if it was an article or possibly it's a book that was published in Japan. I will root around a little and see if I can dig up the book. Quote
b.hennick Posted February 10, 2011 Report Posted February 10, 2011 Our own Ted Tenold working with Keith LArman did a great study in polishing the ends of tangs that were chopped off of blades. Needless to say they did not chop off the tangs. They polished the sword blade end with great results. Perhaps Ted can post an image or two. Part of his article was published in the JSSUS Newsletter.
