Muka Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Hello again, Could anyone help me translate this mei from a rubbing? Sorry for the poor quality image and I could not get the page to save with the nakago rotated upright. Thank you, Matt U. Nakago.pdfFetching info... Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 All I could pick out. XX於覇城X鍛 John Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 What does this actually mean? 應望於覇城敷鍛 Forming a sentence or slogan isn't easy. John Quote
k morita Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Hi, The mei is: "In answer to a request, made a sword by several-time fold-forging process in Hagi (in Choshu province)". Quote
george trotter Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Matt, anything written on the other side? can you post or advise us of the mei if present. George. Quote
Muka Posted January 27, 2011 Author Report Posted January 27, 2011 Thank you John and Morita. As John had pointed out to me, I believe the Fourth character means supremacy or leadership and the fifth character is Castle. This is a tachi that I recently acquired. On the reverse side it says that it was made on the first day of the new year on 1864. Maker is Toshitane. Matt U. Quote
John A Stuart Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Thanks to Morita san, I think the fourth and fifth kanji 覇城 become Ha-gi by sound whereas 萩 is the modern kanji for Hagi as in 萩市 Hagi-shi (city). I may be wrong. John Quote
k morita Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Hi,Muka I guess that Toshitane俊胤 was a swordsmith in Tango province,But this sword was made by him in Hagi(萩, 覇城) in Choshu province. Quote
Muka Posted January 27, 2011 Author Report Posted January 27, 2011 Alright, here's the nakago. It took some work to remove the tsuka, but I was able to do it without too much twisting, wrenching, and bending of the sword. Hopefully, this will provide a clearer picture of the kanji characters. Thanks again to you all!! Matt Quote
