b.hennick Posted January 25, 2011 Report Posted January 25, 2011 I was sitting here at my computer enjoying reading Nihonto Messageboard and it struck me that I realy do enjoy this. I look forward to reading posts and learning things. So here is a list of things and peope I want to give thanks to in no particular order. 1. Thanks to Brian for runing the board. Thanks to the moderators who keep everyone in line and on tract. 2. Thanks to our generous members who support the board with donations. Without them our board would not be able to function. 3. Thanks to the people who help with translations. We struggle and try, but you folks get it right in no time flat. It is great to have you as a back up team and as a team that teaches those of us who struggle with kanji. 4. Thanks to the newbies who ask questions. Your question may and often do lead to great discussions and learning experiences. 5. Thanks to the seniors who provide intelligent responses and thoughtful comments. 6. Thanks to the seniors who provide some biting comments that are indeed needed from time to time. 7. Thanks to those with a superb library who can find an oshigata, a piece of work by a tsubako ... 8. Thanks to the people with a great back ground in art who brighten my day with thoughtful discussions punctuated with images that make me want to learn about a smith or School. (I still want a piece by Natsuo.) 9. Thanks to the authors who write books and then let us know about them. Sahring your knowledge is greatly appreciated. 10. Thanks to those who seems to know everything available on ebay and who the seller is. You find the most amazing things - recently a mon that was an ana in a tsuba. 11. Thanks to those who offer to facilitate things - paying for a membership, buying in Japan, sending something someplace, taking something ot shinsa and on and on. 11. Special thanks to .... my list was so long that I worried about forgetting someone so I left it unfilled. I will be sending some simple P.M.s to folks who make this board a place that I want to spend my time. Quote

ububob Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Thanks for the reminder, Barry. I can certainly express more gratitude in my life. And thanks to Pete for his expression of kindness. Quote

Jean Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Thanks Barry from the moderators and Brian for expressing your kindness, it is very thoughtfull of you considering your collector experience. As a pillar of the Nihonto communauty in North America you must be thanked equally for your support to the JSSUS. Quote
Ford Hallam Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 On-line forums can be monstrous places and all to often bring out the worst in people. Here, on the other hand, I think we have something approaching a real community, with all that that entails For myself, this community is a real lifeline so I too must offer my gratitude. Ford Pete, thanks for the menuki. I hadn't seen those before....I'll make copies this week-end  Quote
Bugyotsuji Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Well, if you put it like that then I will have to agree with you, Barry! Very good thought. General thanks all round to everyone who makes this such an interesting and valuable resource. Quote
DirkO Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Yes, this forum is a daily stop for me (even several times a day) ! To all newcomers out there : this is a good free forum, but if you sell something through the forum, please donate a small percentage for the maintenance of it, or enter the yearly price draw by buying tickets. It's a great informative forum, with some very active and knowledgeable members and I'm very gratefull it exists because it was the catalyst for me to get into nihon-to in the first place. Quote
ironron Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Thanks barry. you about said it all! Just to put my pennyworth in.This board is a lifeline to me, & probaly to many others on here . Quote

Brian Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Barry, all... Was just in the middle of a long reply, and then came (yet another) power outage for 2 hours. Barry has always been a great NMB supporter, and the words of encouragement from him and everyone really are what keeps the forum going. They also remind me that although we are far from perfect, we do have something unique, special and useful here. With people like our Japanese friends here who have helped us for so many years, and everyone else from over 32 different countries, it is more than just about education. Anyone who has been to a NMB gathering will see that strangers feel like they know each other, and many friendships have started through the NMB. It is a credit to Rich S, Rich T, and all the moderators that have come and gone, and those that are still around, that the forum is what it is today. Not perfect, but kinda nice to have around Thanks for the kind words. But it isn't really me that is to thank. It is those who moderate, contribute or just pop in from time to time (some of us hourly) that keep this place alive. Not only educational, but somewhat social too. It reminds me that even close friends squabble occasionally. Brian Quote
Gregc Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 Barry, you're a Prince, and so are a number you who have been a great help to me .... whether you know it or not. Thanks, fellas! Quote
Ed Posted January 26, 2011 Report Posted January 26, 2011 That was a very kind gesture Barry, to publicly say thanks to all the folks who willingly help others on the NMB. A web site or blog or whatever you want to call it is easily taken for granted. Personally, I have been monitoring this board for quite a while and think I would really miss reading daily all of the posts, were it to fade away. No better place to relax with a cup of joe. BTW: What year was the NMB started ?? I can't remember how long it has been, (my sometimers is acting up). Cheers and beers to Barry, and all of the good folks of this board and the the sword community for their willingness to share and to their dedication to the study of Nihonto and it's related fields. Brian Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Ed, By my reckoning, the older board goes back to about the middle of 2006. That's when I took it over from Rich T. Wow...is it that long ago? The old forum is still there....keeping any old info that didn't carry across. Will ya take a look at that old colour scheme! http://www.militaria.co.za/nihontomessageboard/ I am not sure when Rich T took it over from Rich S, or when it actually started originally, but I think we have a long and distinguished history, and have outlived many other internet forums contrary to many expectations. xxlotus8xx Posted January 27, 2011 Report Posted January 27, 2011 Very nice. I echo your thankfullness! Quote
Ed Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 Brian, Wow is right, it doesn't seem like you've had it that long. Time flies when your having fun, eh ? I think I first discovered it right after RT took it over. Maybe Dr. Stein will see this and fill in the blank. Quote
Stephen Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 I know it goes back too or before 1999, thats when i was making all the shows, Doc S should jump in soon if not ill PM him. Quote
Curgan Posted January 28, 2011 Report Posted January 28, 2011 I just wanted to quote Barry and thank all the people here at the NMB for their educational and entertaining contribution at the forums. A remarkable community as said before... Quote
