I believe the shape is [demon] reference.

 

I have 2 or 3 of this tsuba before, including a papered one. I was curious about the shape too, and read a good explanation somewhere.

 

Unfortunately, that is all I remember.

Maybe someone else will cue off that and know what I am talking about.
