As far as I recall, the Chinese spears are nailed to the shafts through holes in the socket.

Han Dynasty, (possibly western).

In case anybody is interested in how the other side looked like (different period, Eastern Zhou, better quality with silver inlay) :

Not all shafts were round, but I've yet to find a "socket" spear with oval shaft. Possibly it was limited to some Sha (Sorry, lost the period info of this one).

Thanks for the info. I just saw another Chinese or at least Asian pole weapon ( half moon shaped) with a long socket and no hole, the owner said it was a ceremonial parade type, maybe pitch would work in that case. I couldnt see a real weapon not having some way to attach the pole securely.

Update on the Kuda-yari. Went round to see my friend after a six weeks' absence and asked about the yari which I had asked him to hold for me. Unfortunately he had forgotten our conversation and sold it to a famous collector who, seeing how unusual it was, had immediately snapped it up.

Well, it saved me from using some pocket money, I suppose. :|

Eric, on the Japanese auction site you posted this was stated :

Real swords and sword related items are restricted by Japan Post and cannot be shipped outside of Japan.

Is that true at all ? I dont think so after having read the import/export threads on NMB. A hassle, yes, but impossible.. ?

Henk, I do not know the exact details as I would never purchase a sword from Yahoo Japan. I do not know it this applies to yari and other blades or just strictly swords. The "related" items I was told would be oils for sword care. You would have to ask the company if they have any method other than Japan Post for shipping a sword outside of Japan. Quite possibly they can use Fed Express etc.
