Hi all,

This one is for sale, and before I even have a closer look at it, I was wondering if anyone can guess the mei here. I get the _ michi part, but what kanji is cut off there (can't be dai?) and what is the other character? Can't say I always trust these nanago with so many unneccessary mekugi ana, but the kinpun mei looks fairly well done.

Many thanks,

Brian

Doh! I had O-Michi, but forgot that can be read as Daido.

Thanks Grey, so a reasonably big name, with all the gimei possibilities that comes with it. Any idea of the kanji top right?

陸 means land or shore. It also is the first kanji in Mutsu no Kuni, so, ??? Out of the many Daido, a few were active in Mutsu. Muromachi, Momoyama periods. It can be used for the number 6 in legal documents, but, not contextual here. John

Brian,

Do the fingernail test on the Kin Zogan. If the inlay is old it should be slightly below the surface of the nakago around it. When done, the inlay was flush but with time the iron corrodes and expands above the gold which doesn't corrode. If the inlay is flush it may be a modern addition.

Thanks all,

I agree with Moriyama san that this is probably the context it was used here. The question is, would a kinpunmei be phrased this way?

Mutsu....Daido. Sounds very abbreviated to me, where there was space for them to add the full mei. A bit odd I guess?

Grey, the blade isn't here unfortunately, it's over in the USA with you guys. :) Don't know yet if I am interested or not, will see.

If there is no other inscription, like saying who says it is make by the maker, then i take it as a mumei sword with some flassy gold on the tang. Who knows who/when the attribution was made.

Sorry, I should have noted it is o-suriage. Odd how short they made the nakago too...compared to the tsuka length. Blade looks to be a waki, but awaiting more info. Wakizashi nakago with katana tsuka, or katana blade with wakizashi nakago. Either isn't too good.
