Hi guys,

I spoke with Al Bardi (the organizer of the Tampa show in February) yesterday. He told me that rooms at the hotel that have been blocked out for us are filling fast. If you plan to attend the show and don't yet have a room reservation better act now.

Cheers, Grey

bobj,

Like a gun show in that there will be a hundred or so tables for dealers, and you can bring a sword to walk around and sell, and there will be a few seminars/displays.

...but unlike many gun shows there will be no beef jerky and beanie babies. ;)

Awww dang. My two favorite redneck items. Beanie babies look so good with my NASCAR legends collector plates.

So will this show still center upon Japanese swords, etc with a side helping of other militaria?

I have some beanie babys with wonderful painta and fine tekkotsu on their rim and the inside of the sukashi. I will bring them to the Tampa Show! Just kidding...

I will be attending the show for the first time and can't wait as I have booked my flights and my hotel room. Just the idea of going to Florida in Feburary for a weekend sounds like a good idea given how cold it has been in Maryland. I am of course focused on what I am interested studying and collecting tosogu but I will still take some time to look around a bit at the Nihonto and other Japanese associated forms of art. Any advice to a show newbie is welcome. :)

Yours truly,

David S.

My advice to beginners or to those who go to their first show is to choose one type of sword e,g. koto Bizen and ask if the owner has any you could look at. After going around the show once you should have a good idea what a Koto Bizen blade looks like. You need to know how to look at a blade. That is on the net in many places. You should handle the sword carefully. BTW Grey Doffin on behalf of the JSSUS gives a talk on sword etiquette and how to handle a sword. It is worth while taking. He usually gives the talk early Saturday morning.

If you have any energy left you could go through again and ask for Mino blades etc. Some schools are not well represented and so asking for Koto Yamato or Yamashiro will result in far far fewer blades to look at.

If looking at tsuba again pick one school as ask for those.

"What can you tell me about this ...?" is usually a good question to ask. You might mention that you are trying to learn and are not ready to buy as yet.

Go to all the lectures/talks that you can.

Drop by and say hello! There will be many messageboard members at the show.

Hi Barry -- looking forward to seeing you again! There will be a handful of tsuba but not a big display as they are difficult to find. It will be mostly lecture with pictures which I hope will not disappoint. Of course if anyone coming to the show has any papered examples please feel free to bring them along.

I'll be attending as well. The NBTHK/American Branch lecture and display will be on Gendaito, and have some very nice and unusual examples.

For those of us who can't make it, how about some specifics???

I will be driving up to Tampa on Saturday. Not sure yet if I can stay for Sunday.

Anyone have a spare Exhibitor badge and 1 to 2 feet width of show table space to buy?

PM me.

The show is this upcoming weekend. I will take a camera, but others always take more & better pictures.

I will be there Saturday and probably Sunday. Anniversary gift arrives on Friday. We have a nice Spanish dinner then, celebrating 1 day early. Then I go off to Tampa and play. I begrudgingly put 3 or 4 items on a table. Sell one or two to cover the expense of the gift. It looks like Cyrus has the Kunitomo Teiei covered, so I won't offer mine out. Afraid I will be tempted to buy one of his.

I'll contend with Valentine's day when I get back. I always wonder about the wisdom of placing this predominantly male event around Valentine's Day every year.

Curran i always wondered that too. Add NASCAR fans and sweethears going somewhere warm...always made it $$$ to book a flight.

Approximately 4 years ago, I asked a senior Florida Token Kai representative about taking pictures of the Tampa show for the purpose of posting these images on this forum. While my request was not refused outright, it was evident from the representative's reaction that my request was more than a little unwelcome. I decided against asking why this was so, but surmised the overriding fear was these images could be easily used by thieves to case the show when posted on an Internet accessible forum. Accordingly, I never asked again. I realize others have taken and posted pictures of the Tampa show on this forum in the intervening years, and cannot explain how this was accomplished in view of my experience.

In hindsight, I certainly understand this fear, but would also submit that agreeing to post show images AFTER the show had closed would've been an acceptable alternative to not posting any show images. Now that the Tampa show is under new management, I'll again ask if it is OK to take pictures of the show. If Mr. Bardi doesn't refuse my request, I'll certainly take & post pictures of the Tampa show for the general NMB membership/readership to review & enjoy. I promise.

Hi:

Many people take pictures at all the shows. No one has ever asked the photographer to stop. Most pictures are of the people. OTH I have taken photos of swords and fittings. Most people are polite enough to ask if they photograph my items I usually say yes. Similarly people ask to take photos of table holders.

Finally it is better to ask for forgiveness than to ask for permission. At least I have often found that it works better that way.
