Hi guys,

One of you asked me a question the other day; got me thinking. I had posted that I'd just added Nihonto Bizen Den Taikan to my online Index and he asked if it existed as a stand alone index of just that book and could he have a copy. It doesn't exist in that format but it very easily could.

Just now I tried it. I did a search for all listings that included BT (the code for that book). I copied a page of the results and pasted it on a Word document. I was then able to erase blank lines and all the sources in other books, and I was left with an alphabetic English index of just the one book. It would probably take an hour to do the whole book.

It wouldn't be as easy for all the books in the Index. The code for Nihonto Koza is N, and a search for all listings with N would bring up most of the listings in the Index. But it could be done if someone wanted it.

I'm mentioning this in case some of you have books you'd like an index for, and are willing to do the work. Also, If you're going to do this for a book in the Index and you're willing to share the results, you can add to this thread with the title and your willingness to email copies to other members. An advantage of this scheme for me is that some of you might find a few of the many mistakes in my Index, and you might let me know about them.

Any case, Anyone interested?

Hi, Grey,

your idea sounded great to me, so I tried it with a very small book  :

"Jukken(Nihon Koto Meisakushu)"

Its not a big opus, but if anybody wants it, I can mail it as a word.doc.

There are seven or eight indexes on my website; some as html, some as zip files. Feel free to use any or all that you may need.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the offer. For 2 reasons I've always declined offers to incorporate other's work into the Index: 1. Without being able to see the oshigata in the book it's not always possible to know exactly which smith is being referenced, which leads to mistakes. And 2. I know there are gobs of errors in my index, but they are my errors; I don't want to be responsible for/take ownership of someone else's mistakes.

Not that I think there are errors in the indexes on your site; just being Grey.

Cheers, Grey
