jason_mazzy Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I do not know alot about tsuba. I know this matches spmwhat closely to the fuchigashira set I bought from Ian on here. I have researched ad I believe it to be called Nagegaku gata. What period and school do you guys think this is, and what would be a fair price for this item. Neither of us know the value of it, and I don't want to pay too little or too much. Quote
Surfson Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Nice soft metal tsuba. Not sure of the school, but I would say that it is Edo period and has clearly been mounted so is unlikely to be Hamamono or Meiji tourist item. it appears to have been cleaned and there is some wear on the shakudo in the hitsuana and removal of some of the finish on the raised work. I would think that on ebay it would go in the $200-250 range, but that's just a guess. Quote
Brian Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Ok..I really hope I am wrong here, but I am going to go out on a limb and be blunt...and say i think this is cheap, low class junk..possibly even cast. I can't see anything redeeming on this tsuba in the way of workmanship. Perhaps to fill a gap when mounting..but nothing is well done here. Seppa dai badly outlined and shaped, poor background finish (poor man's nanako?) and rough detailing. I would pass at $100 personally. Brian Quote
Henry Wilson Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I would agree with you Brian. I think it is rubbish. If Jason Mazzy is looking for something worth owning to mount with his bird themed fuchi kashira, I would recommend that one that Martin H has on sale. Quote
christianmalterre Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 i agree, it "looks" nice-for those who like it-but that´s all unfortunately.... Somehow produced to fitt the demands but no art inside (as Kinko collectors have an look for) Just in the price i would go a bit up-those kind of Tsuba do sell quite better... Christian Quote
Ford Hallam Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 I would agree with the views expressed by Brian, Henry and Christian. I don't think it's cast though but certainly not worth spending money on. Like Henry I'd also recommend the tsuba Martin H is offering. Quote
jason_mazzy Posted November 23, 2010 Author Report Posted November 23, 2010 I have bought martins already, this was to go with the heron and bamboo theme I got from Ian. Quote
Marc BROQUIN Posted November 23, 2010 Report Posted November 23, 2010 Hello, :D This tsuba seems to have lost its original patina and someone has tried to repatinate it, without great success apparently . Anyhow this kind of work looks like SHONAI SHOAMI school but of lower end. The way of carving and base metal makes me think of that. :? Hope it helps a bit. Friendly Marc Quote
