jason_mazzy Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 Got these on an old mucked up tsuka that revealed a shakudo with fine nanako and a crane in gold, silver and red copper fuchi, and these menuki. Looks like a pot with a flower in it surrounded by pines and bamboo on one and bamboo and some other small flower maybe an ume branch? in heavy gold foil on shakudo. Quote
John A Stuart Posted November 19, 2010 Report Posted November 19, 2010 Perhaps a votive offering, mochi in a bowl. John Quote

chuck Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 Actually - the flower in the center of the bowl, with kinda the little knob on top - anyone else think that might be a poppy bulb? Some kind of medicinal bowl, perhaps? peace. Quote
Lee Bray Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 Buddhist connotations? http://www.exoticindiaart.com/product/ZJ94/ Quote
jason_mazzy Posted November 20, 2010 Author Report Posted November 20, 2010 I think in the morrow I will take a picture from the top looking down. It is deeply carved and Maybe it will help. Looks to me like a bowl full of something cookin' or just placed on the table. Like an ornamental dish. Quote
Toryu2020 Posted November 20, 2010 Report Posted November 20, 2010 Jason - Sorry to say but the modelling is pretty poor, making it very hard to say just exactly what the artist is trying to show us here. If I had to say I would think what is in your bowl is a Tachibana flower and around it are other auspicious plants like Plum and Pine but it is very hard to say. Granted the bowl does look a bit like a rendai, a ceremonial incense burner... fwiw -t Quote
